I'm located in the U.S. I've tried Chichester, nothing but small horns. Boone Trading, all out of horns and none coming for the foreseeable future. Emailed Highland Horn in the U.K. several times, no response. Trying to get a deal pinned down with Peter Cua is like trying to nail jello to a wall. I'm fresh out of options....does anyone have any other sources that are available to people in the U.S.?

Highland horn does not supply the States.

www.dick.biz have Buffalo horn plates, 400-500 mm, 3-5/6-9mm thick, width 40-60mm. I have not any referances ... They do ship to "all foreign countries", they say in their catalogue. They are located in Germany.

WARNING!!
Dick have excellent tools and stuff i by my hide and fish bladder glue there but don't buy horn or plates.
I ordered 4 hole horns there and they were tiny tiny the outer curve was like a inner curve on a real horn and the plates is probably from sides with very different quality. But i you like to gamble order from them.
rebel
I live in france and waiting for my order from highland horn just now but as someone mentioned earlier they do not supply the states.
Have you considered using gemsbok horn? I tried to buy some from USA seller in the states and had the reverse problem of them not shipping out of the States. Do a search on ebay.com for gemsbok horn they have other types of horn too. Though I cannout vouch for quality for bow making.
Kind Regards

I don't want to use gemsbok horn. While some have had success with it, from what I have learned experienced horn bowyers consider it second rate horn inferior to good water buffalo horn. If I am going to go to the trouble and effort to make a horn composite bow, I'd like to use the best materials that I can get.

About Dick horns its tru. Only if you personaly go tothe shop and selection from 100 horns , you can buy good material. Like me. But if you need horn in wall like art piece - Dick have most wonderful and original twist and turn in all angels horns what i see in mi life.

like this...

Thanks Dusan and Puzio. I was thinking seriously to order myself. The only thing who kept me from it was the expensive shipping.

Trying to get a deal pinned down with Peter Cua is like trying to nail jello to a wall.
Peter says he hasn't received any specific order from you. He does ask quite a few questions to make sure that what he provides is exactly what the customer wants; but he's a straight dealer.
If you're not getting through to him, try a PM on ATARNet. He does log in.

How much are 2 strip of horn from Peter?
How much is shipping cost for europe?
Dusan
Some time ago i interesting about this. Problem is that postal cost is same as horn price (and more) and i dont know if it is same like in our country ,but we must pay + 20 % , for all products whu are not from Europa countries... For this reason is better choice Highland Horn co. or (personaly) Dick.
Rapsod
I know about Highland Horn but shipping is about 22 pounds!!!
Dusan
Per 1 kg ? I buy 3 years ago some horns from H.Horns but i "use" mi friends who working in Britain. From Scotland to London i pay for 6 horns ( 70-90cm) about 20 pounds too. But from asia its dearly.

We have also custom problems. Horn imports are forbidden in Turkey and finding a horn is very hard. Longest horns like that::
E-mail from highland horn said:
"Shipping to Sweden is +?26 for 2 horns. The price for carriage is
the same for 4 horns ( weight range 5 - 10 kgs"
I have relatives in sweden so I was thinking to ask my relatives to order instead of me because:
"MONTEGNEGRO IS VERY EXPENSIVE TO SEND, ?50GBP FOR 7kgs FOR EXAMPLE,
BUT TELL ME WHAT YOU NEED AND WE WILL PRICE IT FOR YOU"
Bloody hell. Horn is cheaper than shipping. :x
Peter Cua has asked me to post his response on ATARNet.
Peter says,
"I have regularly supplied horn strips with the proper legal paperwork to Turkey, where Cem Donmez is one of my clients. Sending horn strips is never a problem even for turkey as Cem will confirm
--------
"My clients in Europe have never had any import taxes, as a matter of fact no import taxes at all even when the product originated from the Philippines. Postage rates for horn strips are also quite reasonable and in my strips I made it one standard sending rate. No big deal as long as it is just strips; but it would be expensive to post whole horns! That's why I supply my customers with horn in strips and discourage whole horns.
"Dealing in whole horn causes much more official scrutiny because they are classed as a form of unprocessed product from cattle, unlike the strips. So dealing in processed products lessens the bureaucratic hassle and saves on postage.
"I've been dealing with these problems for a long time and I've set up my business in such a way hoping to solve these dilemmas for my clients. There is no point in raising all sorts of worries about not getting unprocessed horn from me and trying to source gemsbock horn elsewhere: sooner or later you'll hit on the same problems too somewhere.
"I assure you that my solution of dealing in processed water buffalo horn is the most cost-effective solution to your problems. I've thought of this for a long time, and with added things like thumbring sas free or bonus. and my finished strips are guaranteed, you can't find any supplier as generous as that .

Does Peter have an easy way of exchanging money with him? I think I would be into buying horn from Peter.
Dusan
Well, all we searching in net horns. Only fue of us was lucky and llive near horn seller(maybe sombody in France near CORNELY , or in Scotland near Hylland Horn Co.) .Last year i was far far avey - 1600 km in Germany - Dick) . I have same question like Amaguk + please more! Can Peter for all us from Europa first and last time clearly explain how we can pay , how much - for example if i buy more then 10 horn strips, more then 20 , or 30 horn strips- if i have chance cheeper price- and if i right understand i must pay 20 % for whole horn to our goverment , but if i buy strips dont ? What is it - one standart postage sendind rate ? How much it is ? And last problem vith quality of horn strips. Whole horn have one big advantige ! If he was good and have long full horn material section (like fue horns what i cut these days) i can cut from only one horn 2 or even 3 pairs horn strips ! And what is coriously- more of this strips are better then first concave layer , becuse he have many scrues vith shrinks and cracks. This layers have that wellknovn Korean "Tiger tile" beatifull look. What vith this ?

Paypal, is genious. I bougth some arrowheads from Mr. G. Czeba once, my bank took a 20 % fee, (and then the state of Norway took 25% VAT  ). Paypal takes much less.

Peter is right, I did not live problems in custom because Peter is know legal way. He sent proper legal papers with horns. İt is very important because it is not possible to take without legal papers ,specially in big city. İn addition goverment veternarian want to show legal papers.
I mailed a question about p&p but they hav'nt answered yet. They have hornstrips.
Dusan
You see his representative picture of strips clearly ? Looks like side wall strips from Dick. Its from Ireland - same post rates like Highland Horn . I mean Highland horns are best ofer.
That link is out, It is Green chicken from paleo planet , he was up to sell things from Peter.
Orda Khan
I can confirm that Flybow stock horn strips and hide glue from Dicks.
JJ
I recently bought some strips from Highland horn. At first sight some of them had deep cracks, but most of them yielded a usable horn strip after processing. They are quite thin, however. One should better order longer horns from the start.
Does Peter Cua have a web site now? What are his prices today? I ordered years ago from him.
JJ
Dusan
JJ if you can read in Making bows topic Turrkish bows making ...procesing , i talking directli about this problem. You are lucka man - you live close then all others near Dick shop.First i libel thes horns because are... nasty .. especiali compare vith this beatiful big Highland Horns but !!! Please read...
JJ
Dusan, on the dick site ( ) I saw they give the length of the horns with 50 cms only. You think they have longer ones too? What about the side curvature of the dick horns? Is it not a problem?
Thanks JJ
Dusan
Oh JJ , you dont read mi article ! This is not about cut strips ! Esp?ecialy site wall strips . This is about full horns and yes , he have more than 1 m horns !!! Or have last year , vhen i buy about 40 horns .
JJ
Didn?t mean the precut strips! They claim on their site to have whole horns of 50 cm to sell. Maybe it means the minimum length.
Next time when I?m in South-eastern germany I could check at their shop what they?ve got.
The photgraphs of your horns bought at dick in the other thread show that they are very "curly". Do you straighten the strips sideways?
JJ
Dusan
Yes , this is minimum size-50cm. This curly horns i buy - because his original beatiful curly - its like antilope , but no a water bufalo ! Like you can see in pictures of cut horn , the other horns are straight - no problem.- Any heating no needed. This horns are from India . Highland horns are from China. Cua horns are from Philipines , another horns in net you can find in vietnam. What is importend is climate and temperature where buls live. Korean masters said - the best horns are from not too hot climate. When you see in Indian W. bufflo pictures inj net - he have same strange curvature horns. From this reason you must personali visit Dicks shop and selected from many horns . I have this lucky chance and i can serching the "right" horn from about 200-300 horns ! Bit like you see in picture selected horns are SUPER horn material mass for minimum money ! Thats mi experiences . I must give a big apologize to Dicks horns , becuase fue weekens ago i mean that was mi worst deel in mi life. Sorry Dick!
Angel
I have made four hornbows with the waterbuffalo horns strips that I bought from Peter. No problem with them and no problem with him. That was two years ago, and the next horn strips that I will order will come from Philippines. Peter Cua understands what I need for my bows.
Angel
Dusan
Thats vonderfull Angel. But if i can buy 1 whole horn in 18 euro price and cut from him 4 strips and made 2 hornbows , this is better deeling . If i cant - maybe i order to from Peter Cua , or from Highland Horns , like fue years ygo.
Angel
OK, Dusan. Good luck. I must confess I have not the "HornTruth". (':?')I'm still learning. Fortunately we have different options to choose....and different tastes. That's the human nature.
Dusan
Thats ok Angel. Tahts only about save money , and chance personaly selected horns. I know that Mr. Hyslop in Highland horn Co. is tru right man , and i believe the same about Peter Cua. But i dont believe that Peter or Mr. Hyslop personali selekted , cutin, and packing horns or strips to post package. This doit some Johny or Georg who never see any hornbow and dont know nothing about, what we needed... If i have chance personali selekted and live "not very long road" (400 km ) to Dick i do it ,thats all.Good luck.
amaguk
OK Why is there no straight forward response to the question? Where can I get horn in the USA? I mean finished horn such as Peters? Does Peter have a paypal account now or do you still send him a money order? I cant imagine horn not being sold by anyone in the US. If anyone has info please let me know. Thanks
rosa
I mailed Mr. Cua and he wished I'd use western union. They charge 10% of the amount you'd transfer. I asked if I coud use paypal, he anwered "we don't have paypal here". I gave up and ordered from Highland.
amaguk
Thanks Rosa. I think Peter would benefit from Paypal or some other way of payment. I hate western union and Highland dont ship to me. I will have to figure something out. Thanks for your reply
I just talked to Mike at chichesterinc, they have what they call XL horn,he told me between 28-31 inches for 40$ a piece plus shipping.
pete
hello ! been lost for a while
i see a lot of confusion and misunderstanding here.

philippines
pete
we dont have paypal here in the philipipines
thats right !
a) so aside from using fast western union - (you are buying time here)
b) any " us bank drawn check " in U.s. $
would be okay to accept if you can produce that and send thru registered mail and will consider paid when received - if its a draft . of course there is no rush time consideration here. because its normal mail travel time.
c) other than that you can use bank to bank, that is also possible. called t/t - telegraphic transfer. to the philippines but im sure its going to pass thru U.S. first. please take note if you are not in U.s. !!!! unfortunately, the 'in -between 'bank abroad passing thru them will tend to take out some service charges from that amount before it reach philippines, - thats the problem with using (c)
hope ive clear out some matters regarding sending money here.

Bede
Peter,
I think some of the people in the forum have high Western Union charges in their countries so that it is not as attractive as other methods.
In Australia, last time I used it, Western Union cost me about $50.00 while telegraphic transfer cost about $30.00. That is in Australian dollars. I would recommend anyone to check out the charges before making up their minds. Even I am not sure from day to day what it will cost. I check each time.
pete
oh yes bede
perhaps you are right.
every country might have their own high western union fees.
but they ask me a question -so i just answered.
if they think its high for thier country, , pehaps it doesnt hurt to ask me again other options???
why some just give up instantly?

i have free thumbring or even other goods generously added in a separate package and im willing to
because we are craftmen and do make other thigns, some freebies meant to "cushion "these pesky expenses associated which didnt end up in my pocket. pls. take note
i know and i undersatnd the added cost. and other inconveniences which
i really dont have any control being in this country.
but you know, i seldom hear my freebies being mention.
so sometimes , im begining to doubt if my generosity to hornbowyers is really being appreciated really or not. these im sorry to say really.
