Question on Bamboo-Wood-Horn laminate
Hej all,
I don't post here too often but received valuable input before, so there is another question:
With asiatic hornbows, the bending part of the limb is pretty small. I understand, this works because the Horn is very pressure resistant, while the sinew can be stretched.
Now my question: what if one would replace the sinew with a bamboo backing?
I'm thinking about the following project:
A "longbow" of about 64", planned weight 50#@28".
I'm thinking about a "Holmegaard-like" design. Meaning the limbs are only bending over half of their length (near the Handle obviousely). The outer half of the limbs will be narrow and thick to keep them rigid and as light as possible.
The overall construction would be:
core wood - juniper
Backing - bamboo
belly - horn (only at the bending section)
Now because this bending section will be only about 28-30" long, there will be very much stress on the material. Especially because I'm limited to a limb width of 1 3/4".
Do you think this is possible?

First think in mi mind is -why ? Bamboo is very strong for juniper. Juniper is good belly for wood bows(Novgorod bow), but for what - horn ? Only for estetic , like in Grozers laminate bows ?
64" longbow can working vithout sinew or horn...

Of course, a 64" bow will work without horn.
This will be kind of experimental. The Holmegaard design produces fast bows.
Usually Holmegaards are selfbows made from elm.
Now the Idea is to keep the outer limbs lighter (Juniper).
I wouldn't trust juniper without a backing. Therefore bamboo.
Now the bending section is pretty short and I fear that the bamboo backing in this case will crush the juniper below. Therefore the horn.
And as a matter of fact, I believe it will look very cool also. 8)

Bamboo is strong for more white woods. Horn can be chrysal to...Go on ! I wait your result . :D
Hi again,
i already build a bow with horn belly:

The new one shout just go a bit more to the extremes.

Nice bow Radon. Than ,why you asked ? Go on and gluing !
This lamination makes not to much sense for such a long bow.
The physical weight is to big, efficiency will suffer.
Horn is used for to reduce the bending section of bows and so mass is reduced.
