What bows do you think are good bows for shooting off of horses? I am personally split between mongolian style and korean style but what do you think?
Katie Stearns
There are many traditional styles of bows that work for horseback archery. But basically, if you can pull the draw, and it is light and small enough to maneuver around on horseback, it will probably work. I like both Mongolian style bows and Korean bows. I recommend for people to use what feels best to them, rather than what they like the looks of. If you are going to get a bow to use often, you will want something that is functional for you, not just a specific cultural/aesthetic style. Personally, the Korean bows that I have shot, shot better than traditional Mongolian bows. But there are a lot of variables, like who made the bow, the draw poundage, materials in the bow, etc, that can influence the effectiveness of the bow vs the style.

Mrs Stearns,

Are you aware of any upcoming competition or training in the US in the spring or summer of 2010?

I just recieved a proper bow and am very interested in pursuing this wonderful sport.

Would like to be able to gather with those with experience and knowledg.

Thank you

Joe

Hello Joe,

Getting a bow if a very good start! Do you mind if I ask where you live?

I do not have any solid dates for events yet. However, I am sure Holm and I will teach another clinic somewhere, and there will most likely be a couple training events hosted by the MA3 around the US. Currently I am in the process of updating information on my website (http://mountedarchery.net), as well as the new MA3 website (http://mountedarchery.org). When I know of any planned events I will post them on those websites, as well as here.

Holm and I often practice year round as long as weather permits. If you ever wanted to, you are welcome to come visit us in Bend, OR, and learn about mounted archery. I help teach clinics as well as private and group lessons in archery, horse training, and how to use them together in horseback archery.

Keep in touch,

~Katie

Katie,

I am living in Grand Rapids MI. Your website I have been watching for updates. It would be great to make a trip to Oregon, if for nothing else to come and watch how it is done. Do you have specific dates when the clinics are held?

regards,

Joe
