What period or culture was the book, Arab Archery made in? Also, what style of composite bows were used in this culture at that time?
Bede
The book was written in Morocco. The bows described are slightly longer than Mamluk bows. The manuscript for the original translation was dated 1500, but if you search through the ATARN site you will find some interesting new research on the work's origin. There was some confusion in the posts between Mamluk and Moroccan.

I got my copy of the reprint yesterday. Great read though its obviously a photostat of a copy in the University of Michigan with page edges and various other marks throughout.

Unfortunately the photocopying process has failed dismally with the illustrations, three of which just come out as black smears. The ones opposite pages 40 and 97 are particularly bad. If anyone has the original of the book and can photo and post them here I would be grateful. Otherwise I am left guessing as to what they depict.

By the way, Bede, could you be more specific on where to find a discussion of/new research on the book on the ATARN site?

There is a clearer copy bound and printed in Germany with three other works, Beveridge's Oriental Crossbows, Von Hammer-Purgstall, and Hein. It also worked out cheaper.

Regarding the discussion of the origin, I took part with Alvaro and others, but I don't remember where it was since it was some time ago. If I can find it, I will post the URL.
