Book on Stone Age European Archery

At #3 WTAF I was given a copy Of Pfeil und Bogen (Arrow and Bow) by atarnite JJ of Germany. He writes this book, in German, under the nom de plume Jurgen Junkmanns.

Although it would be impossible for me to review this book, it is still possible to recommend it. A large number of illustrations from Mesolithic and Neolithic sites across Europe as well as middle ages finds are not so difficult to decipher with the use of a German dictionary! Many of the photos are seen elsewhere but others have been referenced but hard to find.

The bows and arrows are shown in clear plans complete with cross sections and scale. Talking to the author, it seems that the book is a culmination of a master's degree thesis and maybe more. Pity there is not an English version available.

The relationship of this book to Asian archery is that many stone and bone arrow points found in Europe correspond well to those found in Central Asia, though a distinct lack of archaeology in Central Asia has yet to produce the perishable remains.

If one would like to have a detailed picture of the very beginnings of archery from known artifacts, find Pfeil Und Bogen. Jack Farrell

Ha! I was actually very curious if JJ may be J?rgen Junkmanns :D .
I haven't read the book yet but it's on my list and I'm strongly suppose this is a very good piece of writing.

I greatly admire J?rgen for his clarification of the common misconceptions concernig the design of the Holmeg?rd bows. He really must be a person with serious approach and vast knowledge on the subject.

Hello

I know the book and the author, all of his works (f.e. the articles in "Das Bogenbauer-Buch") are excellent.

A question to the author, has there been any proposition for a translation of the book into English? I apologize for not being discreet, but I'm really so keen on reading it and my German is, well non-existent.
Otherwise this is a good reason to start to learn German :D .
JJ
Ashbow, I am currently working on an english translation of the book. Hillary Greenland had suggested I should do it and it seems that she would help correcting it and also in trying to publishing it in England...

Best regards, JJ

JJ,
This is a great piece of news, I'm sure Hilary Greenland will do just great.

JJ; Don't forget Jan Sachers for technical assistance. He is a professional and his English is impeccable.

England English and American English have their differences.
JJ
Andrzej they used to have it in some french archery shops and on editions primitive, in french;-))

Jack, I will try my best, then HIllary is supposed to take out the errors;-))
