I have cut and ground my water buffalo horns too size. A couple o f them have cracks that go about 1/3 of the way across the horn.
Will this be a problem on the finished bow or does it matter on the belly?

Hi CEL, welcome to the ATARET.
Usually waterbuffalo- horns have such cracks, more or less it has impact on the bow. It depends not on their length but on their depth. If the cracks are not to deep, you can rasp or cut the horn down until you get an even surface.
Final thickness should be 3- 4mm.

CEL,

I think cracks which run longitudinally (lengthwise), are no problem in a hornbow. The problems begin when you detect cracks that run transversely across the horn strip. Then you should check if there?s enough thickness, in that case you can take out the cracks by sanding, as Redhawk already suggested.

Longitudinal cracks might have a slight effect on stiffness but practically no effect on strength.
