In response to some questions in earlier threads, I looked up this article on archery. It has many sections on each regional area. It covers pp 67-104 and has some photographs and diagrams. There is also a 2 page list of references.

Bede - are archive back issues of that Journal only available in microfilm? Or is there an online source that you know of?

I don't know. I have an original copy, a gift of a friend.

Bede; I do not mean to barge in on your topic but wanted to share these pics. Back at the SAMA, a case displayed this Solomon Island bow of the early 1900s. Do not remember seeing another. Decoration was described as rattan but could also be hibiscus fiber. Bow wood unknown. Described as a fishing bow.

May delete soon.

Jack,
That's a nice looking bow. Depending on the area, the wrapping could be any of a number of fibres. The work I started this thread about mentions palm bows from the Solomon Islands with Calamus sp. (rattan) bindings and Hibiscus fibre strings. The arrows are said to be made from Phragmites karka as in New Guinea.
