I think lots of members in this form have the same thought. It is the basic courtesy. Many of us are from different countries and ethnic groups. But when we gather here we must show our respect to all and let others know what are we talking about. There are forums in French, German, Italian and others, But when they are here they talk in English.
Stephen! Please note if things goes like this, many will leave this form and don't want to come bake any more. It will be a great lost.

Sincerely

Agreed that it would be easy for everyone if English were the only language used on ATARNet; but I don't plan to take any action against people who do not have the confidence to write in Egnlish and so write in another language.

Many traditional archers have valuable knowledge to share, although their English might be poor. I would prefer that they write in their own language, rather than remaining silent.

History is long , and the nation is multitudinous in the great empire of China . The bow is also a lot , and welcomes everybody to come to study . My English is not good , and requests everybody to forgive .

Now you are writing in English,it is good. I think you can also improve your English skill a lot by posting articles here. And I think your English is far better then before.

I am born in Italy, I live now in Switzerland and speak mostly French, I would like to speak even a little German and to improve my English that is very poor.
The idea we have in Europe about oriental cultures and peoples is that in these cultures respect and "forms" are fundamental things. They are not "just practical" or "just useful", domined by the unique value of efficiency as we are.
I think that idea of respect and "forms" can be real if we believe in it strongly enough.

Jiao (Arrowhead), Yokhua have answered to a message you wrote, perhaps his answer was not what you expected, but he always have been correct with you. I think he just don't like to receive sarcastic remarks as an answer to his message which was *correct*. He want to be respected as anyone wants to be. Perhaps we have all something to gain following this spirit which is - formerly - deeply integrted in oriental cultures, a mix of forms, courtesy and respect for other peoples. Respect others is the best form of insurance to be respected.

Best regards

English may be the lingua franca of the world, but that doesn't mean everyone should learn it. I'm a student of Chinese - quite early stages - and I'm applying to universities in England and Scotland to study Oriental Studies (Chinese). It is helpful to me personally when people use Chinese, or other languages.
And when in Rome.... we are all studying oriental bows. Why not study them with the Oriental languages?
Jaroslav
The thing is that I actually learned english to chatter about bows on discussion forums. THis took me about 3 months hoevevre mostly from reading and watching MASH.
If I would like to learn Chinese I got to apply for university and even so many people do not have the chance.
I m pretty sure that most people can learn speak Japanese if the knew how easy is the language, but I prefer to have tutor for the first stage at least.

So sticking up to english is logical thing.

For someone who learns English in 3 month trough watching m.a.s.h,
probably there isn't something such as a difficult language. However, japanese can be learned in a very systematic way by its simplified
modern japanese alphabet. Still Names will be written in Chinese characters.
I think he refered to that when he meant"easy". On the other hand, everything if easy if willpower and determination is there............................

No. Japanese is very dificult too learn. But the most dificult is writing system. They use 4 diferent way of writing. Kanji, Hiregana, Katagana and Romanji. Romanji is nothing alse but normal english alfabet and english writing system. Anybody who want to find more on Japanese lenguage can go at www.omniglot.com.

If you ask what are this small bows at bottom of page, I can ansfer. That are lady bows used in houses for lady entertainment. I have somewhere a drawing in which are rapresent couple of japanese ladies who shots with this small bows.

Don't try to be smart. Google translator is not good. It can translate just few frazes corect and the rest translate litterely.
Jaroslav
Jiao: I m reffering about speaking of course. The language structure and gramar is also quite easy. The written word is world of itself.

However this is not the issue, as I do not have tutor for start.

Jaroslav

I also learned fairly good german by myself (I was thought to be indigenous by local people after 4 months in germany) and can read in few other european languages, altough I m not able to speak them as I never spoke a word in them. I just learned to read and translate the text in my language. Never get myself to learn how to pronounce things actually.
To think about it my english speaking friends are laughing off sometimes when I say something, but that doesnt concerns me much as long as I m able to comunicate fluently.
Jaroslav
Perhaps main problem with all this issue is because of my unintentionall replacement of word "simple" by word "easy".

Because its meant to be simple, not easy......

.....as one of my friends often says about archery.

Welcome to the Tower of Babel. I think that different languages like cultures are a richness. I invite you all to discuss in my mother tongue Finnish  . You can find a Finnish traditional archery discussion forum at http://www.perinnejousi.fi/keskustelu/index.php. "Perinnejousi" means "legacy bow" or rather "traditional bow" in English. It maybe easier for your to start the discussion with the Finns first in the Non-Finnish Discussion section the forum (newly created). Tervetuloa Perinnejousen keskustelufoorumiin! PV

Mine was from Kiiminki (near Oulu). Had the greatest time with her and her family back in the summer of '80 (the midsummer nights took a bit of getting used to, though--you really had to pay attention to your watch).
