Korean Hornow Questions
Hello everybody.
I finished my Bamboocore 28" long and 0.15" thick, is that OK ??
For the Hornthickness, ...is 0,15" enough ??
For the Siyahs i use acacia, and about 14" long around the belly,...is that OK ?? (The wood and length) ?
So the hole Bow has 49" length around the belly.
How thick should the Siyahs be when finished, only the wood, without sinew.
I Hope for Answers,
Greetings from Austria.

Hello,
I forgot one Question.
How i can bent the Hornstrips to an half circle ??
because my hornsripes are straight. (Waterbuffalo)
I heard that to boil the horn is not the best ??
It would break more easier when the bow is in use.
Is it right ??
I hope somebody can tell me, how to bend the horn.

Boiling is fine for horns, it doesn't damage them at all.
Also, you should keep them straight, and that will give you a sort of Perry Reflex when you glue them up into reflex.

The horn is attached to the core with glue and bound in place with a rope. The core is in a semi-circle, so the horn conforms to it.

here a very, very short instruction line:
1) check first "CUTTING HORN FOR BOWS" by Adam Karpowicz on
http://www.atarn.org/islamic/turkish_bo ... g_horn.htm
2) Boil the horn strip(s) in a kettle
3) Flatten and saw it (different ways to do so)
4) Prepare the wood core of the bow
5) Prepare the horn (with or without groovings)
6) Pre-shape wood core and horn by steaming them (use clamps)
7) Glue horn strip onto the wood core (see prior picture from Thomas)
Final shape of the horn and core (see prior comments by Yohuka in ATARN)
9) Insert block between the two horn strips and shape it
10)..... and so on
see pics 1 - 3

Hello,
Thanks for the Info
One more Question:
I finished my Bamboocore 27" long and 0.15" thick, is that OK ??
Then I bent it to an semi or half Circle.
For the Hornthickness, ...is 0,15" enough ??,...its already finished and grind (ground).
For the Siyahs i use acacia, and about 14" long a peace, included the (?V? cut?3? long) around the belly,...is that OK ?? and is it the right wood ?
So the hole Bow has 48" length around the belly.
The thickness from the siyahs I want to make is 0,5? from the nock, flattened to the core splice to 0.5 ?,?is it OK ??
How width should be the Siyah from the Slice to the nock ?? flattened or straight ?
I hope for your answer
Sorry if my English ist not the best.

Thanks

I wrote a mistake at the last message, from the siyah thickness.
To correct : 0,5" from the nock, flattened to 0.15" to the core splice.
Is this thickness right ??
Sorry

Austrian Wolfhorn123,
So many questions to answer ... I firmly sugguest you have a look into the Traditional Bowyers Bible by J. Hamm. Volume one and two are available in German, volume three has not been translated yet. There you will find a very good description with the necessary details (e.g. the making of a Korean horn bow). I am sure you will get the answers.
Shortcut: If you are interested in, I am going to send you those pages.

hi wolfhorn,
one thing I was wondering is that you?ve posted that your hornstrips are straight.I?m almost sure that you got this hornstrips from a German dealer who offers ready made waterbuffalo-hornstrips grounded to a thickness of 3-5mm and with around 40cm in length. The price is very good(16EURO).But he doesn?t really know to much in hornbows or he is just a moneymaker. He cuts every part from such a horn into strips, but for a hornbow you should take your strips out of the outer or the inner circle of the horn(Reto posted the link to Adams cutting of the waterbuffalo-hornstrips,that?s it!).This is the only way to gain the great reconstitutional power of the horn and to produce a reflex, this is the main reason hornbows were built.
I boil my hornstrips just before glueing them to the wooden core for some minutes cause the fishbladder-glue works better under warmth.
If I use horn from a mountain-goat or a ram I have to boil them for bring them into a straight line.
