Deer antler thumb ring, rustic...

A few observations. An an experienced woodcarver antler was an unexpectedly difficult material to work with at first. Very few of my bladed tools were suitable and the material itself is very difficult to work with anything but sand paper, rasps and rifflers.

This is my first deer antler ring. A friend of mine procured me a box of antlers from a yard sale. How could I say no?

When I made this one I just had to leave the rough outer texture of the antler on the top of the ring. It doesn't interfere with shooting at all.

Let me know what you think.

Byron; You have a very delicate touch. Keep up the good work and I am sure you can make a name for yourself. Once you get into it there plenty of prototypes. Kay Koppedrayer wrote a book on the subject. I have not seen it but this may be a lead. Her writing is good.

The recent post by Gao Xiang can be followed to a site where many of his rings are displayed.

Hi, Thank you. I'll look for the book and at Gao Xiang's post. I'd like to try my hand at re-creating period rings in detail, so finding resources and historical documentation would be most helpful.
