Beginner project questions - Korean horn bow
I've been fascinated by traditional horn bows for a while now, and I really want to try making one myself. More specifically, I want to make a Korean horn bow with a bamboo core and water buffalo horn.
So far I've read the article in TBB3 and everything I could find on the internet. I ordered Adam's book last week, so it should be arriving in 3-5 weeks.
In the meantime, I want to start gathering materials, but I have a few questions:
1. Would a Turkish horn bow be better suited for a beginner project?
2.There is a japanese garden shop nearby that sells green bamboo logs with 4-6'' diameters. Could I use them for cores?
3. I'll order horn and sinew from Highland Horns. How long should the horns be? And how much red stag sinew do I need per bow?
4. I haven't been able to find mulberry wood, so I plan on making the siyahs from mountain maple: http://www.pfeilschaft.de/epages/617917 ... 0Siyahs%22
Is this suitable?
All advice is much appreciated :)

You started very fast. Maybe better make for first project somthing like Manchu or Mongol bow. But, if you very hot to fight- turkish bow was maybe better than Korean for your start intensity.
Green bamboo is super for you i envy you this chance.
You need (for Korean bow) about 55-60 cm horn plate , so bigger horns is better for you.
I dont know how sinew you can buy /cattle, wild animal , leg or bacstrap?/ . But important for you is weight. Sinew was in good composite about 1/3 of his weight /+- , beter buy + , becaus in sinew working you have about 20% smal cuts - good only for glue cooking/
Better for your "siyahs" is acacia wood /must be all arround your home- like in all Europa/ . Korean masters use accacia too - mulbery is in shortage situation. You can select best tree, vith best part for your plan.
Good luck

You can get pre-cut horn from Pfeilshaft for about 25 - 35 EUR per plate, depending on the length.
Dusan: Thanks for the advice :D
daryush: Are they any good? I think someone said that they were no good for horn bows...

By the way, pfeilschaft.de has a mountain maple set:

Would it be useful for a Turkish bow?

:) nobody cant say only from small pic. I recomend you - cut yourself your tree.. Or minimum go to the profesional wood shop an personaly select best wood. Work in composite bow is hard and long- than you select best material - if you respect your work...
Not sure. I haven't turned them into a bow yet. But they're very bendy.LB52 wrote:

Sorry, their prices are really alien or subsurface. I bet they haven?t never done any hornbow. These are dealers, capitalism as usual.
Cut your bowwood by yourself.
