I will continue forwarding posts from Mr Wun from S. Korea. For those who have not been it is most highly recommended. Jack

Dear Sir,

This is Mr. Wun, Director in WTAF.
I have really appreciated for your participation in the 4th WTAF.

The 5th WTAF will be held in Cheonan where the 1st WTAF was held and date is planned on September 23th ? 28th.
The 5th WTAF is will be held with more various and developed programs.
Also we are going to make an effort to accept your suggestions and opinions.

We will do our best to enjoy the festival with more countries and participants and I hope you also prepare in advance.
Please let your friends who didn?t participate in WTAF know the 5th WTAF.

If you have any suggestions and idea, please let us know.
We are going to give the notice steadily.

Take care always and hope to see you next year again.

Okay, won't miss it this time.

Will it be a similar arrangement as before where participants pay for their travel to the site, and the organizers take care of room, board and registration?
jack farrell
Justin; This is how it has always been. Travel support is offered on an as needed basis. For instance those from Mongolia would not be able to attend without travel support.

I find it nonsensical to go all that way without looking around after the festival. Half of everything in Korea is in Seoul and there is discount accommodation. Out side the capitol, accommodation is extremely reasonable. S. Korea is just an excellent place to see and travel.
Stephen Selby
Jack,

Can you give an honest assessment of the non-competitive aspects of this event, such as cultural or academic exchange and opportunities to purchase equipment? I had to advise Peter Cua, for example, that there was little in it for him to attend as my impression is that is has gravitated to a highly competitive event. But then I haven't been there for a couple of years and I am not so well-informed.
jack farrell
The nature of the competition is that almost everyone is off balance, shooting at eachother's unfamiliar targets. The line judges seem unfamiliar with the rules, indeed, my feeling is that the organizers are not even archers.

But some shooters are quite serious, others not. Some come prepared, say with special arrows for the Mongolian contest, others try shooting their usual equipment, somewhat unsuccessfully. One can tell that many have practiced shooting at different targets, others look like it their first time to do so.

I have enjoyed seeing the Japanese evolve. You can imagine the pressure on them from their Kyudo training to remain faithful to their tradition as a mechanical hog target passes by in a timed set. It is hilarious to see some (maybe Buddhists?) shooting at a foam deer target. (they put the horns on backwards, HA!)

Then there is the mysterious competition inside of the competition, the Koreans against themselves instead of us.

To sum it up, it is about the fantastic camaraderie. Putting a face on people you have typed messages to for years. If it was a highly competitive event, they would not invite me to represent the USA. Just ask my friends!!!

Hope to see everyone there. -j-
jack farrell
I and my entourage have been hosted by the director of the military museum and various officers, given hospitality at a living treasure bow maker. Made friends with an important arrow maker, met Thomas D, Eugen and DeGang, Peter D, JJ and all, gave two well received presentations, gave and received valuable presents, have been invited to other countries, ate Korean food!!! discovered fantastic museums, saw the sights.

Excellent cultural or academic exchange. And we see eachother there! -j-
Justin Ma
For me, meeting people, visiting vendors and attending talks/seminars would be more interesting than the competitive events. (I want to diversify my thumb ring collection to include some of the more esoteric types, so this would seem like the right place to find them.)

That's very important!

Hello, this is Mr.Wun in WTAFOC.

We have made an effort for better 2011 WTAF.
Also WTAF website will be established, you can get the information easier than before.

To enjoy WTAF with more people, please let other archers know the 5th WTAF. If you have this kind of information and any good ideas for WTAF, please send e-mail to us.

Best regards.

I encourage any adventurous archer to go to Korea this year. If you absolutely cannot afford it then ask them to please buy you a ticket. They will put you up in a dormitory and feed you three traditional, strange, healthy Korean meals a day.

Stay several more days in Seoul at the Youth Hostile (very cheap). Make friends and accept invitations to visit Korean workshops, archery ranges or dinner. Meet people and be changed for the effort. More of an expedition than a vacation. Allow events to unfold, don't get too upset at the unexpected, wait till you get home to decide if you had a good time.

The Koreans are excellent hosts and fine people. You may find yourself changed.

I think that another reaction I had to the first event was that I was being shoe-horned into a 'nationality'. I felt I had to do something based on Chinese culture (!) although I should have preferred to compete using Tibeto-Mongolian Hungarian style with Chinese characteristics. :)

Unfortunately, it looks like the shoe-horning is even more explicit this year. They want people to shoot the bows of their nationality (and it sounds like they do not like other nationalities using Korean bows). I guess this means I have to somehow get my hands on a California-Indian bow --- or maybe since the compound bow is becoming something of a tradition in the US, I can bring that instead. Moreover, countries with no native archery culture to speak of will be getting the shaft.

Here is the email in question:
"
Dear Sir,

From this year, all archers should use your own traditional bow and arrow.

Some of archers use the Korean bows, not their own bow in 2010 WTAF.
Korean bow or other bow is not accepted this year. So please bring own you bow that made in your country.

Also if you someone finish the abstract or paper, please send it us.

Best regards.

Maybe not the best idea, it certainly affects any westerner who is interested in Asiatic bows.
cristian_iepure
I know a bunch of great guys shooting Korean bows that will not come to WTAF this year if this new contest rule would not be changed.
jack farrell
You can imagine how the Japanese have had to change to compete in WTAF and the probable criticism they suffer from their compatriots. The Hungarians have already reinvented traditional archery into their own image. Bhutanese and Mongolians attempt to modify their equipment to fit an international eclectic.

So you guys now have 6 months to make or borrow or buy a locally made trad. bow and get some practice with it.

A wood or bamboo backed bow can be made in several days.

The Koreans have not specified design.
jiao
how did Japanese Hungarians Bhutanese and Mongolians change or modify something?

what bow will be call the chinese bow form korean and which china dynasty will call chinese bow?
jkekoni
You mean:
1. Buy korean bow
2. Modify the handle
3. Call it ming bow ?
jack farrell
Jiao; These were just some examples. Japanese had to learn to shoot faster and farther, Bhutanese to shoot closer, Hungarians have redeveloped their own archery culture, Mongolians had to bring arrows with points and others do better with an extra set of blunts.

The Korean rule should be a benefit to local bow makers.
Orda Khan
But it is restrictive, nonetheless. It is certainly not the all embracing feeling of previous occasions. My understanding of WTAF was a place where traditional archers could meet and enjoy traditional archery. This change is now saying archers should use equipment from their own country. There is no design mentioned admitted, but it's all very well to make a bow and take that but it's just not 'your bow', it's not what you would choose to do. If you currently use a Korean bow and you really enjoy it, would love to go to Korea to use it, you can't. This is sending out the wrong message in my opinion.
jiao
hm.......i sure stephen can do more beter things in wtaf not only join compete , can wtaf and atarn can do right symbiosis? let archery up to country and nation for peacem and friend. not only compete(i take the compete is use my best thing compare your bad thing and enjoy the succeed or my bad compare your best never has full justice)
jack farrell
Guys; I have only been to two WTAF's in Korea and frankly am somewhat miffed when I see someone with a knock down recurve and carbons. This is just not the spirit of the competition.

To practice traditional archery, one has to go the extra mile. There is nothing simple in arriving with a quiver of wood or bamboo arrows with no plastic or factory parts. Same goes with the bow. I find my various Korean bows intoxicating but these are the inventions of the Koreans. Maybe they see a lack of traditionality in someone arriving and shooting with Korean equipment at an international event.

No, everyone cannot make their own equipment but they can find a traditional source and follow that lead. This will lead to the real growth of traditional archery and not just Korean traditional archery.

In all honesty the Koreans are too polite to keep anyone from shooting with anything short of a compound. But, Hey Guys, pour your hearts into something traditional and come and show it off!

I'm curious to see a sample 6-day agenda to get an idea of what percentage is occupied by the competition. What if people attended but didn't necessarily compete? Would there be unstructured sessions for folks to shoot (any bow they want) and socialize?

Or even better, set up booths or dedicated hands-on seminars for people to try out new/unfamiliar styles of archery and equipment (if you hadn't already had the privilege, wouldn't this be a great opportunity to try shooting a Japanese yumi, Turkish bow, Bhutanese bow, etc, etc, etc)? Personally, I think the hands-on seminars would go a long way to promoting diversity and the exchange of ideas rather than watching people compete.
JJ
Jack,

fully agreeing with you. Guess the only thing that annoyed the Koreans really was that more and more people turned to the unexpensive Hwarang bows that are on sale on the festivals and decided to shoot with them because they realized that they were better than their bows brought from home ;-) That way the "international" flair of the competition was watered down a little. Nobody will say anything to a western participant that shoots with a recurve hunting bow and carbon arrows, for example..., well it is their tradition ;-)

The Korean festival is currently turned down by many people, but I have to say that it is a great possibility to meet other archers from around the world that display a wealth of ethnic archery styles. I learned a lot and met wonderful people. I dug into hornbowmaking again because of the hornbow archers and makers I saw there, some of them being Atarn members.

JJ
M??a
Halo.
I?m from midle Europe and I visited 2009 WTAF.

I have a hight respect to Jurgen(JJ) and all others which are trying to find lost art of hornbowmaking but probably I cannot full underestand idea of WTAF. It isn?t competition and I thank that it is social purpose to meet other traditional archers from all the World.

On 2009 I could to see Korean archers with hornbows and with plastic replicas of Koren bow with painted marks for aiming (itś strictly prohibited in all systems I know)
[external image]
there was possible to see english longbows, some well made hornbows, mongolian bows and a lot of laminated replicas of historical bows. Some archers were used historical or traditional arrows, some wooden arrows from modern comercial components some carbon arrows...
Some of them were in traditional or historical costumes, some in sport, but uniform dresses with club or national identification.

There wasn?t any basic idea in archery, but it was nice opportunity to speak with interesting peoples.

In my country isn?t archery from 13 century, but there was possible to find other nations with bow.
Now we are shooting from all types of bows.
I?m shooting from Turkish bow using traditional technique and arrows, but I know number of excelent archers with Korean bow and mediterran release, with ancient Egyptian bow, many types of longbows, middle Asia types..... any of them isńt typical Czech bow, but nobody knows what is typical Czech bow.
We are shooting on world historical targets, some our disciplines, in FITA and EAA (middle Europe archery organization) 3D and target shooting, horsearchery (Rare).......

Maybe WTAF is parades in historical costumes with brassmusic now. But for Czech archers is impossible to take a part in accordance with this rules.
We can to camouflage us as mediaval archers with equipment with problematical historical value, or to shoot with contemporary traditional equipment (but in contemporary dress) as is defined in sport rules (traditional Reflex bow, traditional longbow, instinctive bow etc.) Or we can shoot with traditional bow and equipment which is normal for us during Year , but it is prohibited.

All serious archers knows well, that it is imposible to compete with other bow than your own. Archery festival with this rules has probably different idea than archery

But to make a rules is a basic privilege of all organizators and for us is neccessary to respect it

Howdy my good friends in traditional archery. Most especially to jack ferrel

Perhaps many knows me already in this forum. . But I have some questions in what you gentlemen are doing. I personally love cultural adventure

Anyway, For some time, ive been invited by wtaf even first time being form . my first invitation is many things are given to me ?free of this and free of that?.

And the question thrown to me is : can you form a Philippine tribal team that can perform archery showing Philippine archery.?

At that time, My answer is no . because its takes some special arrangement with the government before tribes can be allowed to go out. you see, its not that easy. But you can imagine how interesting will that be right? Im on for it. Before . the problem is how to?? thats my problem before.

But now I think ive found somebody in our government I can team up with and will be able to even join wtaf of 2012 , if if hospitality, accommodation or plane ticket can be given. I hope after so many years that I have tried to find the means and ways. Till now , Then what ? non of these major freedbies is available now. ? well I hope not. That would be a shame wouldn?t it be?

Im talking about the tribal negritoes , pygmy people of our country. Who is good at archery too. Stephen been here with me. He told me when spanish conquistadors invaded Philippines and under 300 years of rule. Our own basic culture was wiped out. But I told him stephen Yes and No ! But now I think I may be in the Position to even prove this. Archerywise. Now my answer is - positive, i can prove there is yet very ethnic tribal archery in action.

Many expresses that cultural archery is so important in wtaf festival. I fully agree . our negritoes can even dance the tribal dance and willing to do so. and good at tree climbing for exmaple and shoot from trees.

The drawback is philipines is a a poor country. And perhaps though now can form a team , some kind of plane fare assistance may be needed for these tribal archers representing Philippines.

Im requesting Stephen to visit me again in the next 2 months or so. to make an evalation of what I can form. And also archery rules regarding wtaf- hands on.

But a at least. I have expressed my concern.

Ah yes another concern. Our tribal is half naked and dress in G -string since we are tropical warm tropical country. So if these kind of people and costume to bring to cold climate , such as korea. I hope our tribal people wont catch cold collapse or whatever, not to mention shivering while drawing the bow. Ahahah im thinking of a very funny scenario.
( but its no joking matter ) Since it?s a mixture of all kind of culture and yet. Climate is not the same. Oh gosh. I hope not even food. For example is Korean food spicy , hot. ?

But thanks for telling what happen jack. Im sure there will be a lot of confusion / even misunderstanding that might occurred . Since its very culturally diverse. But I think it because of this bow and arrow. handled by different culture that will make wtaf a very interesting place to join. if they play they cards right so to speak.
Hope we don?t forget the culture side of it from competitive side.
It should have a 'balanc'e and not leaning fully on one side.

I hope everybody is not their to prove they are good or better

but we are there to show we are in 'brotherhood spirit ' in this long lost art in archery because of this modern world modernization.

all the best,
peter
Philippines,
jack farrell
Peter; I think this is an excellent idea but you must decide about the obstacles. I will discuss a few. Your people will be welcomed with open arms and much enthusiasm. But you must ask yourself what will be the impact on these Negrito people. Can they travel on an airplane, travel in crowded cities, eat the Korean food which is extremely different to many people? They must have clothes for traveling and wearing but if they want to shoot in their tribal clothes I believe there would be no problem. Koreans are very modern peoples and they greatly honor hospitality.

There is a small problem in Korea getting someone to make a decision. Most in authority need to ask someone above them to make a decision and often this means waiting until the proper person can be asked. One is sometimes stranded by this chain of command. In the big city of Seoul, one must be able to move around and arrange transportation and not be timid.

I feel certain that the WTAF can make all travel and financial arrangements and would be thrilled to have you and your team to come. The Negritos may want to demonstrate their skills only or to arrange their own special contest. All others shoot up to and over 100 yards and some types of archery are not meant for this purpose.

Your team would be quite welcomed and actually are at the center of the meaning of preserving traditional archery.

In short, can your fellows take the culture shock? DO THEY WANT TO SHARE THEIR SKILLS OR ARE WE PUTTING THEM ON DISPLAY? Are we being fair to them?
jack farrell
PS Peter, Some years ago a fellow decided that some of the best runners in the world belonged to a primitive tribe in Mexico. He decided to take some of these runners to several marathons. The results were very mixed and I am not sure that these people care to compete in international type running events.

I am sure these Tarahumara still discuss what happened.

This was evidently the belief of some of the old voyagers. Navarette, whose account of his travels in 1647 is published in Churchill's Collection of Voyages, 1704, said that the people called ?Zambales? were great archers and had no other weapons than the bow and arrow. Dr. John Frances Gemelli Careri, who made a voyage around the world, 1693?1697, says in his report (Churchill's Voyages, vol. IV): ?This mixing [that is, of Negritos] with the Wild Indians produced the Tribe of Manghian who are Blacks dwelling in the Isles of Mindoro and Mundos [probably Panay], and who peopled the Islands de los Negros, or of Blacks. Some of them have harsh frisled hair like the African and Angola blacks. * * *

quoted :

While I mentioned the docile characteristic of the Aetas at the beginning of this article, these indigenous peoples indeed engaged in warfare in certain phases of Philippine history. A number of historical works significantly mentioned the role of the Aetas in the fight against the Japanese in Luzon during World War II. One book, ?On A Mountainside: The 155th Provisional Guerrilla Battalion Against the Japanese on Luzon,? by Malcolm Decker, describes how the Negritos of Luzon helped the American forces in driving out the invaders. The book was based on the accounts of Malcolm?s father Doyle who had served as an American soldier in the Philippines during the war.

On the heroic exploits of the Aetas during the Japanese occupation, Filipino writer Ramon de Jesus penned the following words in ?World War II in Zambales:? ?Only seven Japanese soldiers escaped from the attack. A few days after the massacre, a Japanese punitive force was sent to avenge the death of their comrades. When the Japanese force was passing through Poonbato on its way to Sitio Villar, Negrito guerrillas killed 30 of the Japanese soldiers with their bows and arrows.? De Jesus, in the same work also narrated how Aeta archers served as lookouts in various gatherings of the resistance forces during the war, it reads. ?Negrito bowmen led by Pam Melicia provided security during these delicate meetings.?

yes , im invited by mr. metin, thanks mr. arsilian for the website.

what i wish to know now is, in real scenario

can tribal archery who is only on bamboo bow compete with warbows?
thats why i wish mr. stephen selby to be here with me again to evaluate things with me.

wonder if there is "category" like bamboo compete with bamboo bow
hornbow with hornbow only and the list goes on.

so called ] some type of
/Level playing field ==== if not, then we better start something with fairness to a certain degree.

we are of hunting bow of small to medium size game

while other bow culture is meant to conquer a dynasty !!!!

wheres the level playing field there?

if i read jacks explanation, seems as though, theres no level playing field................well at least so far yet?

I have observed that jungle people shoot long heavy arrows which are meant to penetrate foliage and shoot into deep water. These same arrows will not shoot a long distance.

A horn bow with short arrows will not shoot well in the jungle. These are two different types of equipment. Best to find out how the Africans did at WTAF. Maybe some input from the Peruvians and Bolivians how their equipment fares in field archery.

Have any of your fellows ever been on an airplane, stayed at a hotel, traveled in a city of millions of people? Peter, can you imagine them ENJOYING going to Korea?

= exactly they even have 3 points tips for fish
actuality they have about a dozen kinds of tips. handmade with barb

some are like 'release harpoons' for mammals , release point.

These same arrows will not shoot a long distance.
= well thats what i like stephen to come here for

to see what good will such tradition be here for
does this coincides with, for example wtaf motto? principle
or its just again another traditional "olympic" with just "icing " on top of it only ahahah

= i see.

= how about making a separate category for such equipment. ?

knowledgeable organizer must know how to categorize this intelligently

not about a hay target and shotgun . handgun 45, uzi shooting all over it just because its a 'gun shoot activity'. - just a metaphor

or our kind is more for the tradgang stuff and not "traditional "archery crowd. i dont know , you guys pls tell me. and throw me to the right direction.

Have any of your fellows ever been on an airplane, stayed at a hotel, traveled in a city of millions of people?

= can i tell you something ----------- yes they have to my greatest surprise. some can even text message to you in english.
( of course not all )

some are instructor " for the american GI here.- certified jungle survival instructor.

as i said, america owes these natives. in a sense. most especially during the vietnam war where Philippines is the training ground for jungle survival.

Peter, can you imagine them ENJOYING going to Korea?[/quote]

= yes. i can imagine. ahahahah

can you imagine also if one happen to die of sudden weather change for example ,ate something they are not used to ( knock on wood ) what kind of deep responsibility i have? and what? I have to be 'manager 'for them? in addition to all these added risk. /responsibility.

but do you guys wish to see natives like that? and hope they join ? so do we deserve some freebies otherwise its not worth it and just to justify and be encourage. ------------ i tell you.

next year is our 'centennial games year' celebration . a big thing here. . this kind of archery might be included. and might have hospitality. anybody interested to come ? sponsored by the govt. im trying to suggest of such added activity. Im trying to help here.

Very interesting indeed. Bring lots of extra bows and arrows so we can buy them.
pete
Okay although, I have a sense of humor here. , but
im coming back to atarn and to be so serious here.

Its no joke for me to bring cultural minorities out. But this can happen, and im working at it. For now

But just for next year alone, we have one very important "centennial games." One of the proposal that I could make is to have this so
called' traditiona'l archery games./competition

What I like to have from atarn people / organization consisting of so many countries to write me a letter . ( thru scan, with your letterhead ) saying that your group are interested. To learn more about such gathering and that you gentlemen wants to be informed about it. Because you are interested on such festival if there is such to be formed and held in the Philippines. it is also an 'encouragement' letter to the government.

How many organization do we have here ? can you guys be say 5 or even to 10 letters all over the globe being it personal, or organization. ? Then i submit to our government. Proving that there is such interest worldwide. The letter then will also be the basis for inviting you in priority of Who you are.

Look im being the ?bird dog ? here. Bridging between the east and the west. . im sure there is at least hospitality provided and other attraction for free since it the government staging many games. And this combines with many other sports. It?s a big thing here. . Im also being task to handle some other sport.too.

Can I get peoples cooperation here. /? archer and jungle survivalist enthusiast ? Just some type of letters. Of serious inquiry thru me. And encourages the govt here to go with such proposal of mine. Something like that.

The govermnt are very ignorant what is happening outside of modern archery but Im the one who had known this way from the beginning .I just want to show that indeed there is a whole new world about this. And so I am to show them some written proofs here. Remember now if this materialsizes, anybody writing me the letter will be prioritize to be invited , since being known

xxxxxxxxxx

Heres what is in my mind:

1) There will be traditional archery competition

side adventure here are , part of the program

2) jungle survival skill demonstrations. ? demonstartion of how negritoes train American soldier to survive in the jungle. And guided jungle walk also. you will be taught where to get water, from trees, vines etc so on and so forth. build fires from bamboo etc.
.
2) natives will cook food from large bamboos to you and serve you. Something I wouldn?t like to miss and is so proud of this. And should be part of the agenda I will insist!!!!! things are so delicious when cook inside bamboo and done in tropical jungle.!

xxxxxxxx

Im sure its going to be a totally exciting experience/ culture to you guys. I just need your cooperation regarding this. Our govt will be shock after seeing there is indeed organized vintage
archery after all when letters are shown.

You know talk is talk , while showing something in written form is of another thing. Which im going to make it ' convincing'. To the hierarchy here.

Then of course a team forming to go out of the country representing Philippines as Philippine team , to join other cultural archery will then be easier to form too. hows this sound?
