I find it interesting that he is using the "sting walking tool" from the grip towards the tip. In the photographs from Chengdu, the bowmaker starts binding the horn down from the tip to the grip. He ties the end of the cord to the ear or tip of the bow and works from the outer end of the horn to the grip. The Beijing way seems easier if you are matching the ends of the horn together on the grip. The Chengdu way suggests that the horn was not expected to meet in the centre of the grip so that either end could be the starting point. It would be tidied up by inserting another piece of horn or bone to cover the centre part of the handle.

These are useful photographs, but would be even better with more informative captions.

The only assistant I had when using the binding tool was my 3 yr old daughter so I had to find an easier method and found that starting in the middle with the tip pointing towards me was the most convenient if there is no one helping you. This way after a couple of dry runs I got the horn bound on both limbs in a total of 20 min and I was going slow.

Hedda Morrison did a lot of photography in Beijing (then called 'Peiping') in the 1930s. Some were published in the Asia Magazine, and I've shown them on ATARN elsewhere. He seemed to take a particular interest in archery and bow-making.

Stephen,
Hedda Morrison was a she, not a he.
