Can anyone give me an idea as to the subject matter of this book. I understand that the title means "Turkish Bowmen". However, does it cover to any extent any of the technical aspects of Turkish bow or arrow making?

Also, is this book scarce?

Many thanks!

David,

İt is about old Turkish archers and bowmaking( not for details). I will buy this book and write to you.

Cem, Many thanks for your response. I kind of thought that it might just be on Turkish Bowmen but didn't really know the content of the book. Thanks again for clarifying. :D

David,

I just buy and read this book. İt is about famous Turkish archers, Sultan Mahmut II, archery areas, records, bowmaking and historical things. Bowmaking pages are from Telhis book and not detailed, I can not see any secrets. Archers (kemankes) life very interesting, discipline and power of archers( arrow makers, bowyers, and life too) are very impressive. Some archers work for 7 years one record and Sultans-people supported the archers. Archery was a part of Turkish people life, Im sad to see one generation are enough to lose very old archery cultures.

Hi Cem, Thanks very much for your recap. I'm glad that you now have this book. It's also interesting that you note that the details on bow-making come from Kani's book. Apparently, Irtem's book does contain some excellent material on archery in Turkey. It also appears to be a good book to have in one's archery library. I still hope that one day an informed translation of Kani's book will be available in English.

It is sad that it only took one generation to lose an archery culture. It's great that individuals like yourself help to keep these cultures alive for posterity. :D

Within a century, thousands years of information and enriched archery culture disappeared and today a few bows again can be found around but the culture is gone.

Mr. Donmez is sadly alone.

I recently noticed that a group of people are working hard to establish a Traditional Archery Federation on their own terms in Turkey but I am worried about the consequences. These very same people questioned my religiousness and asked if I drink wine, adding that they can not share anything if I am not afraid of god.

I never asked for any help but sincerely asked what I could contribute as an individual for the future of Traditional Archery and bow making in Turkey, their response and question was irrelevant and looked like pre-written text sent to masses. If you know what percent of the Turkish population prefers to seperate their religiousness as a personal matter and never accept it to be questioned, you can easily predict how many Turks may walk away from these people. In short they will never be able to represent Turkey but only a single religious group.

These people have been members of Atarn for very long time. They have collected and are still collecting information in Atarn from bowyers who gained experience long before they attempted to make bows. It would not take a genius to realize that the bowyers and fans of archery in Atarn share their knowledge and experience without caring about other parties background. If some people learn precious bowmaking information from people who are from other religions and then use this information to establish an authority that questions the religiousness of people from their own country, it is natural for some Turks to be concerned.

Up until a few weeks ago I had not taken this religious group seriously but recently after learning about their agenda for the Federation I wanted to share what I experienced. Since I don't hesitate to think that you would wish all the best for the Traditional Archery Federation in Turkey you should know that there is a chance that this Federation sadly may not represent all Turks.

I never read an argument regarding a personal matter on Atarn and I want it to remain that way. Anyone who wants to argue with me can send an email. I have material to make a stand about what I shared above.

Respectfully
