Question about the handle of the korean bow

hi everybody,
who is able to tell me,whether the handle of the korean bow has to be flexible and to take part in the bending process(similar to the ELB)or not.
What else could be the reason for its very small size then?
Thanks for answers....stefan

The grip does not bend. If it did the grip riser will delaminate.

As Jack said, it does not bend. The core of the handle is made out of oak, so it is very solid.

One reason why the handles on Korean horn bows were so small is because Korean hands, in times past, were small. Also, there is a very particular way of gripping the bow in Korean trad archery, so that a large handle would be an impediment.

How come modern Korean bows seem to be made with fairly large handles then?

I'd figure a smaller handle would be nicer to shoot. I've been thinking about removing the extended grip on mine too :?

Thanks for answering!

Since I started to make korean bows,Imade them with a bigger handle,
more like the turkish one.As I had to learn are the fades of the handle
the most stressed parts of the bow ,probably because of the high reflex
in this part.My idea was, that a slightly bending handle would ease that
stress. As you can see on ``youtube:archery korean bow making 3``
is the handle filled up with a white piece of something, that I can`t
identify, nearly as big as the handle itself ,and wrapped with some kind of
tape,on my hwarang bow its grip-rubber.
Would it be possible to leave away a wooden handle at all and yust wrap
a grip?If you would let the horn be thicker close to the center of the bow,
maybe you could achieve the correct tiller shape! Stefan
WarBow
stefan,

Do you have more information about the Korean bows you make? It seems no bowyer is making the old style Korean war bow.
stefan kaletsch
Hi warbow!
The Korean Bows I make are(Ihope so) quite close to the modern Korean
Target Bows with a poundage from 50-60 lbs.I have modified them a bit and
I?m still developing and learning. All my informations about that theme I`ve
picked up from YouTube,Atarn and some good books.I intend to post some
pics soon.Unfortunatly I do know nothing about Korean Warbows and their
characteristics but good luck for surching ! Stefan

maybe ask Yokhua he should have some further info about that.
as far as I know the old korean bows are supposed to have had a "tatar" design (say, turkish-like but with handle reflex like the crimean tatar).
There is a post about such a bow in Crepy, France here on ATARN..
