Looks good so far!

Is it horn, wood and sinew?

Draw picture please, this is a bowyers forum, not a painters forum.

thanks for nice words. it is hickory core , 3 mm horn , 3 layers sinew. limbs 3 cm - 2,3 cm. Leather and hickory make bow little to havy , about 430 gram
but I think bow will be not slow, we will see on chrono.I try to make video from shooting in this weekend.

Lukas; You have done a nice job. I looked at your other posts. This is how I recommend that one arrive at a horn bow; self bow, backed bow, then horn bow. Congrats.

I for one enjoy paint. It says in the Danurveda not to shoot an undecorated bow.

Hi Lukas, nice bow,the artwork is very well made:how did you do that?
"I for one enjoy paint":me too.
Congrats.

Gorgeous.

great shape, let's see it in action

video with bow. Shoot fast with light arrows , on video I use very light arrows about 24 gram not 9 gpp. Draw stack on 25/26 inch , bow is not easy in use. In future I must make longer bow or working handle area or something else, I must think.

HORN?
Uli
thanks for the "bow in action" scenes.
thumbs up !

Lukas; 190 is a good speed. It is possible the string is hitting your cuff on release absorbing some of the power. You might try wearing a smooth strong leather arm guard over the jacket for trials. I prefer rawhide armguards.
lukasznawalny
speed is not bad but shooting comfort not high. I think deflex area should be a little closer to handle, give longer working part of limbs and longer draw.I start to make 3 scythian style bows, so I make few experiments, we will see
jack farrell
Lukas; Have you seen Stephen's long post on the Yanghai bows and their construction?
lukasznawalny
I have read this great article http://www.atarn.org/chinese/Yanghai/Sc ... _ATARN.pdf . Maybe I will try make similar reproduction , bows looks amazing but I worry about dynamic with so deflexive design. I like Nowotnys scythian bows , it is no replica but I think shoots very good
jack farrell
I like your bow and I like all hand made bows and I especially respect a shooting composite but if one really wants to say something about a Scythian bow then it should be a Scythian bow.

Two thousand years of technical improvements separates Scythian from Turkish bows.
Uli
awsome ! thanks for sharing.
lukasznawalny
two new horn bows 40 - 45 lb , one in leather , second in cherry bark , arrows barelled with swan and hawk feathers, bows are not very fast about 175 fps 9 gpp but with light arrows shoots nice - 18 gram barelled arrow in flight style 240 - 250 meters

and one more

It is not traditional way, so it is not scythian bow replica, onle scythian style bows. I make core from one piece elm or hickory , glue only in handle. steam wood in steaming machine and make shape of horn strpis and wood in special forms. I use fish glue and cow or deer sinew. In deflex areas I use 3 layer sinew , near recurve only 1 . Tillering is similar like in wooden selfbows, without tepeliks.

Quite impressive! I always liked the scythian style. The cherrybark looks very interesting too. Was it harder to process compared to birchbark?
Uli
wow congratulations.
& cherry bark looks nice..
jack farrell
Very pretty. Well done.
lukasznawalny
thanks guys for nice words. I work actually with turkish and crim tatar bows, so maybe soon I show you something more traditional
Feather
Very nice! Does the horn extend all the way to the end of the tips? I wonder if they have to given that the tips seem rather static.
jack farrell
I notice there are plenty of symmetrical Scythian type bows. Maybe it is my imagination but I see these most often on Greek pottery. (I can only suppose that there must have been Greek bow making workshops). But the bows of the Scyths are mostly asymmetric.

On these bows, the bends on the lower limb are all compressed and the deflex is more extreme so that the center of the bow occurs at a place where the grip is leaning forward. This helps the little and ring finger to make a firmer grip. On the symmetric versions this is difficult or impossible. With a tight grip from the lower hand, mechanics of Persian shooting and Kyudo would seem to apply.

As one draws the asymmetric bow, the bow hand rotates forward noticeably. But of course, when released, the string returns to the place of balance of brace. This is a feature of all the asymmetric bows I have shot but is very intense on Scyth short bows.
lukasznawalny
Yes, last 10 - 15 cm near recurve is in my bows static, bows are a little asymetric - lower limb is stronger, with thumb ring give symetric shape in ful draw, with 3 fingers lower limb have too much stress. I have made scythian for 3 finger user and bow was very asymetric
Feather
Sorry another stupid question.... The lengths you mentioned of about 105cm- are these along the curves?
