Bow Box
I made this box to celebrate my trips to Korea. The idea was morphed from traveling boxes of Tibetan and Mongolian manufacture of the late middle ages. The themes are all of Korean origin but done in the colors of the traveling trunks. Those who do not like decoration will loose some sleep here.
The box is all wood with hand made hardware also; snipe hinges and hinged hasp. The bow is one of the semi=horn bows. The arrows are recycled used Korean bamboo arrows selected and turned into a set. This is the back cover.
The bow is #57 and an excellent shooter. The box, however is very slow. On the streets of Seoul, a street performing shaman type did my dharma (Hairy chest) which is decoupaged onto the inside. I was told the artist was not a monk but his signature states that he is. His handprint also.
Is this a bit obsessive? Certainly! But we love our toys. Closeup.
Very nice indeed Jack I have had a idea of doing something very like this for some of my bows for some time now...Thanx for posting this and prodding me onward with the project.
Nice! This is something I have been wanting to make for a long while too. It looks very sturdy. Have you sent this as it is in the baggage on airplanes?
It is a lovely case but I think baggage persons would trash this quickly. I think I will think of something bound in iron for my horn bow...
I made an undecorated rectangular bow for my last trip to America and all i can say is that the baggage handlers were so impressed someone made their own luggage that they gave it extra care. One kind man wrapped it in so many layers of plastic that it looked armour-plated.
Jack's is much more handsome than mine and I am sure it would earn better treatment. I made mine plain because I thought it would be damaged, but it only received a slight dent.
The theory was to beat the 62 inch rule where to qualify as normal luggage the item has to have its length width and height add up to 62 inches or less.
Congratulations Jack on bringing art to luggage.

Thankyou guys. My first one was a plain one for traveling. At my airport the last thing you can see happen to your luggage is it slides down a long steep ramp onto the carousel where the bags crash into the others already turning or else into a barricade. I would never subject this box to such treatment.
The originals were made of thick rawhide or else wood covered with thin rawhide. Mine is a much scaled down version of the old ones.
Happy New Year to my friends out there everywhere.

This box is an eye- catcher, it is a beauty and somehow looking funny. If I would working at a customs clearance, I would steal it.
Cheers, Michael

very nice !
Beautiful craftsmanship!
Now you need to make a bigger box to protect this one from damage :)
This bow box last went for a trip with me. Better bragging rights on one's own bow.
Very interesting , useful & nice box! And of course a Scythian bow is incredible!!
