HUNTING ON TATAR MAPLE !
I have had a free time on a week so I spent it on a making a forms for my future Turkish bow(3-piece construction) & searching "hunting on a good tatar bow wood . I aimed on a 47 inch long bow from tip to tip & 60 pound at 28inch. I cut an 8 straight enough trunks ( that I found in the country not so far from my house) . Unfortunatly I found out that the trunk can be seen purely (without a knot), but when I removed bark & separated at half - it looks unpleasent for core! See pics, trunks from 12- 16cm in diametr mostly 65 cm long. (except 3 trunks larger diametr & lenght)
8 of this halfs has a big grain deviation in a knot area. Here only one trunk is almost good(except the knot on it's end)
So I reduced the thickness to 1.5 cm (except tip 1.9) cm thick made some notch on the inner side for kasan/tip (1.3 cm thick) & put them to soak for 3 -4 days. Also made it shorter to (61cm) avoid the knot from the most bending area.
the second half is the same. The lenght of the bowstave is 65,5 cm exactly. the width on a flat surface is 4 cm, width on the rounded 7cm. the thickness on a both ends 2 cm. But also I noticed a bit twist on a both halfs near the end . Is it bad??
No :D
oh, really :D ? I think the absolutely straight end will be for kasan & tip.Uli wrote:

good idea:
straight part is needed where you want to heat-bend

Nice that you found useful pieces Raf. I love the picture when the grain is good exposed and i've learnt where i did mistakes in selecting the wood and how to select the good pieces. Now you're lucky man!
Хвала Зоран! I spent almost 6 days searching a good stave. Do you have Tatar maple in Serbia?Zoran Pavlovic wrote:
