clamping gelled glue connections
I've noticed most "serious" users of hide glue (luthiers and violin makers) never clamp hide glue joints after they've gelled. In his book Adam mentioned that he waits to clamp core joints until they've gelled to keep them from slipping. I consider his word more or less gospel in these matters, but I thought I'd bring it up for discussion. Thx!
I would say it depends on how prefect you did saw the joint. If perfect you should not need any clamp. If there is minor gaps you help the glue draw the surface together with a clamp, but you can never clamp a bad joint so it will be perfect.
Well said Redhorse. These cuts were pretty decent, and after some experimentation I found I could clamp the joints before they gelled with light pressure from a spring clamp without them moving.
I clamp the handle to a board and then mate the limbs to the handle, clamp them to the board. Nothing moves :)
- Hello
I work in a similar method but use some hand-made accessories. I taped a few joints I've never had a problem. as said Redhorse - joints must be perfect. also be observed centre line of the limbs.

Those are great suggestions! Nice jigs Pazuzu. I'll have to make some of those!
Very smart my friend! 8)
Those long scarf joints are clamped together by Korean bow makers with a single piece of string.
Exactly Jack - the Korean bowyer was my best teacher...
