Cracks under the major bumps(Ibex horns)
Hi Everyone!
Here I processed an Ibex horns. I found out that there is nothing very special and hard (Adam was right) :)
I don't have a bandsaw, so I used an alternative way. Most work I've done with two angular grinder(different sizes) & belt sander.
Everything looked quite good till I cut and sanded the bumps (on Ex- outside curve) And sooner I found several cracks at the bumps area(You can see on the pictures, that there is a white "circle"& cracks are in it. It was pretty hard to determine them earlier.
This is the first horn, I hope the second will be clear.

Here is the cracks on the one side ( I think the reason maybe - the male of Ibex fought to each other pretty hard & this causes the cracks on the outer curve)

yes i think it is fight result, can you find some character form horn surface to know inside horn cracks? like some light penetrate the horn, i know some red laser make the effect of your finger transparent ang light, maybe you need add rubber to horn or cut "egg" of male if feed ibex, all strong and big male animal has lots fight also it has lots wound, maybe it is reason why some old or near break hornbow or subeixi hornbow use sinew wrap horn ,
the horn form adam's how cut horn also has white area in a black horn, some old korean bow horn become white

I like Jiao's laser technique. But the bumps are the thickest part of the horn. I find damage in the rings between each year's growth between the bumps. Honestly I have never seen a flaw like this in a bump. The grain is confused in the bump like a burl in wood. So right now I have no answer.
The horn can still be useable. Many bows have horns very narrow, even less than 25mm wide. I would narrow the strip by a few mm from the damaged side. Also, the bows have the bellies round, so the crack may disappear completely once this is done.

Thank you very much for comments Adam, Jack & Jiao!
Ok I will put this one for a future needs. Today I begin to process the second one. I hope it will be better. Also I talked to the seller about the horns. Good news he have a new pair of Ibex horns. Also he sells "argali" horns Ovis ammon karelini. Did anyone tried them?

Ok Jiao. I will make more & better pics with tools . But as I saw on my own experience Tatar maple (in my region) is too knotty & too soft about 0,47 g/cm3 - 15%humidity & 0,45g/cm3 12% humidity(http://www.bizzcom.ru/poroda/574.htm). Ginnal maple is a bit harder but more knottier than Tatar. So my choice is Norway maple(Acer platanoides) Also it's very close in characteristics to Sugar maple from North America. I tried robinia pseudoacacia too . It's pretty good (took a sharp bend at kasan eye) maybe a bit heavier than maple. Next I shall try a wild apple(diffuse-porose ). I saw a good bow stave in a wood not so far from my house.jiao wrote:
