Archery equipment in Germany/Berlin?
I'm considering seeing Rome this winter, and is of course wondering if there's any museums there that contain any archery history?
Edit: OK, change of plan: We're driving through Denmark to Berlin/Germany instead, to see the egyptian bows 8)

Any suggestions of archery-related stuff to visit is greatly appreciated :)

Ah, that's what worried me, hehe...
Well, maybe it will be Berlin/Germany instead then 8)

Hm, that's where I live! Have not discovered so much archery history so far, but I would invite you to a beer or two if you come over.
Cool! We're probably going next week or the week after :)
I'm at least aiming for the http://www.egyptian-museum-berlin.com where I hope that one still can see one or two egyptian bows.
Hopefully we'll see the Nydam and Hedeby longbows too, if we manage to find the museums. But I'd be thrilled to see some more composites.

Nydam museum is nice. And easy to find. Beside Gottorp Castle in Sclesvig.. Also intresting exhibitions in the castle. But easy to get lost.
Hedeby I visited a couple of years ago, with the sole purpose of seeing one of the few existing complete wiking age bows in the world. Had to ask several people before somone could tell me it had been removed to the make room for the plexiglass of a museum designer. Check before you use time :x

That's too bad, Lurz! - but thanks for the hint. We might drop by that museum on our way up one of these days.
We were just visiting the Turkische Cammer in Dresden today. Pretty hefty bling-bling stuff! - and lots of bows, arrows, quivers and a few thumbrings. Sadly they were really strict with photographs. ...I got permission to take one picture of some of the bows, but then I had to tell them that I had been driving all the way from Norway to see it ;)
I will get back with a better report on it later when we get home, but here's the picture:

:D welcome to Saxony !
The exhibition was definitely worth the trip! They also had a nice catalogue/book for the exhibition, with lots of good photos of the equipment. In the exhibition there was also what must be the worlds most expensive set of an arrow and a bow quiver. They were both fully covered with gold and stones, including over 100 diamonds!
At the same museum there was also a very good exhibition showing a large amount of plate-armour++.

Ha, inspired by your trip, I think I'll go there in March. I'll follow your advice and try to talk to someone from the museum in advance.
Is it wise to keep the bows strung?
Cool, Arry! Hope you're allowed to document a little more than what I were :)
Paku, I think many of these bows have been strung for a very long time. I would guess about half of them were strung, and many of those were quite twisted. Some severely. If they have been strung for a long time I don't think it matters, as most of the tension on the string is probably gone by now.

Well, I contacted the museum staff, and they are quite forthcoming toward people who are keenly interested in ottoman bow details.
There are no additional bows stored away in the fund - all the bows that they have are on display. So in order to take a closer look at a bow, it would have to be removed from its cabinet. Surprisingly, this might be possible - theoretically, on a Tuesday, and with sufficiently early notice to the museum staff. My visit is on too short notice, unfortunately.
Still, I thought this might be of interest here. Maybe some kind of ATARN get-together in Dresden could be arranged?

Wow! (damnit, hehehe...) Now I want to go back 8)
Well, do :D
So, I went to Dresden and the T?rckische Cammer, too. Besides lots of hand weapons, muskets, armour and horse gear, there is around a dozen of Ottoman Turkish bows on display, most of them still strung. Only three of them showed visible damage, one only superficial. Furthermore, lots of bow quivers, arrow quivers and arrows. I definitely recommend a visit.
Also, As Amarutu has written, the exhibition catalogue is very nice and worth having.

Hi Arry, Kviljo,
I am one of these interested persons! I still own the cataloque (a very thick book). If we can find a coincident date (preferable July/August), it would be great to meet you in Dresden!
looking forward

Peter, I have already been to Dresden. Maybe there are others that would co-operate with a visit there. It would have been very cool to see the exhibition together with some experts. More eyes to catch important details :)
Peter,
all,
I am in contact with Mr. Schuckelt who is responsible for the collection. He is very helpful and indeed interested in contact with experts who could provide additional/background info on the bows. For this, I am not really competent. But here in the forum, there are quite a few renowned experts.
As stated above, it should be possible to meet in Dresden on a Tuesday and have a closer look at the bows.
If this Tuesday is in July or August, I might not be able to come because of professional reasons. I would still be glad to organize such a meeting with the staff of the T?rckische Cammer, however.
All the best,
Jarek

Hallo Jarek,
erst mal danke f?r deine Bem?hungen.
