Hello,

I would like to thank to everyone who shared their bow making experiences. Without your contributions it would have been an impossible mission to build such a bow.

The posted bow (not my first) is:
ntn = 124 cm
mass = c. 450g
5 piece construction
matching grooves
core: steam bent (1h) mountain maple 12 mm thick
tip pieces: laminated (steam bent then glued), two slats 12 mm thick
glue: rabid hide glue (sizing wood 20% (w/w), wood, horn gluing 25 % (w/w), sinew 20 %)
Sizing for horn gluing: 20 times with 2 % (w/w)
Sinew: deer back tendon 3 layers each c. 30 g
Seasoning: 2 months after the last layer, the tips were not drawn into too much reflex
Tiller: opening with the spreading tool over a week, then successive bending over the tepliks (slowly, slowly), then pressure and some scraping of horn, no heat was used.

Every comment is welcome.

Best wishes,

Lukas

Thanks for the comments and compliments!

According the force draw curve, the stacking starts relatively early but in my case it is not big problem because the bow is not drawn much into the stacking region - if at all.

In the beginning the bow had some stability problems (moderate twist of the reflexed region), which was corrected by scrapping horn along the side the Kasan and wood at the nocks. Application of pressure did the rest. After several times of bracing and correction the bow is now pretty stable but I still keep an eye on the alignment after a couple of shoots.

I am pretty happy with this one as the sal-kasan transition opens satisfyingly, which was one of the aims.

For those who are interested:

The finish (as with the construction of the bow I followed largely the advices given by A. Karpowicz) :
Calf leather 0.3 mm thick
Shellac until the leather is saturated (two times)
Priming coat
Color coat
Paint is a mixture of spar varnish (le tonkinois) and oil paint
Gold is fake pigment mixed with varnish.
Finish is inspired by the bow with catalog nr. 30 of the Dresden collection

Best wishes,

Lukas
