Magyar bow design question, grip + bone side plates?
Hi, I have some questions regarding Magyar bow grip design, also advice needed regarding bending the grip-bone plates.
1. Grip design- which shape is recommended: A, B or C?
2. Bending bone plates? I will attempt to bend bone plates with heat, is acid (vinegar) soaking necessary before? I expect to experiment with this process.
Can experienced Magyar bowyers describe their methods?

The 2 bone grip plates are fitted to each side of the Magyar , also MB and and some other contemporary designs of Hunnic? style.
Forgive me, I asked 2 questions, but illustrated one only.
The illustration in the first post is the plan view, looking down from above the grip of the Magyar bow, and is linked to the first question regarding the shape of grip.
I assume that the straight grip A is close to the MB (see Andrew Halls drawing).
Grip B may be logical, allows the arrow to pass close to grip (bow?) centre.
Grip C is I guess a modern (Ottoman?) inspired design?

I would not bend the plates. Wrap the grip with leather or something else to give it a specific form.

1. with heat, soaking in boiling water for some time, press into form, wait until cool, bone retains shape. can use dry heat. can soak in distilled water (with vinegar-acid?) before heating.
2. with acid, "white" distilled vinegar is diluted with distilled water, soaked for some time, pressed into shape, wait 24-48 hours for evaporation of liquids, bone retains shape.
The violin-bow makers bend bone to form a part of the violin bow, the methods I describe are the traditional violin-bow makers method.

B is fine if you look at it from belly.
You cannot bend bone plates of 3 mm thickness. If you soak it in acid for a long time it will be soft and never will be a bone again.

Is that bone or antler?
The original ones made from antler and not from bone. The antler is more flexible and it schould bend a bit lenghtwise if put it in boiling water. It has a very close natural form like the grip have.
Otherwise the original plates are not flat.

The material I am using is bone. I will reduce the thickness to 1.75mm- 2.0mm?, I will use only heat to form the bend.
Antler was the original material? next time i will use antler. I will talk to the Highland Horn about obtaining the antler scales.
So, the antler plates on sides of grip are bent in 2 planes, I have added another illustration.
