I am very curious is there any published translation of this Mamluk threatise (English, French, Italian etc...) Risalah fi al-furusiyah. There's descritpion of different kind of bows beside archery stuff.
Thanx!
Bede
There might be French translations. Cahen translated one Mamluk furussiya manual into French. The archery section was published by Boudot-Lamotte. This was pre-Mamluk from the time of Salah-ed-Din.

Bede, you probably mean Al-Tarsusi's work translated in French Contribution a l'?tude de l'archerie musulmane, i have this manual but Risalah fi al-furusiyah was written in 14th century during Mamluke period and i have only information that it contains archery stuff and mention of different types of bows. I am searching for earliest several pieces construction. Al Tarsusi mentions siya(h) but also bone. In the Mamluke art of 14th century bows similar to later Ottoman form appears, in the art covered by Serbian feudal vassal estate under Mrnjavčević dinasty in Macedonia it appears right after first major clashes with Ottomans (1371.) and continues during the time of Moravian Serbia in 80's of 14th century and Despotate of Serbia at the beginning of 15th century. Later depictions after fall of Serbian Despotia are rather schematic and cartoonish.
I am not sure that this threatise was translated :(
Anyway, thank you Bede!
Best regards,
Bede
The problem with the 14th century manuals is many of them are recycling earlier material. There might be a description of the contents and the sources in either Scanlon's introduction or in Shihab al-Sarraf's Mamluk Furusiyah Literature and Its Antecedents.
