With their powerfull bow and arrows, even with these weapon's equipments;the ottoman bowyers and archers were very impressive and famous due to their weapons performance.

But at the same time;they also had a very-very effective,unnoticed shooting technique.It is ;

'' The Ottoman's lost and forgotten,real bow drawing-shooting technique ''.

Good point when it comes to flightshooting with siper. But it seems to be useless for shooting with the long arrow. Thanks for sharing!

Not used for only Flight archery. This techniue had also used all kind of the archery shootings such as Target and even with kepade training and in the war by the Ottomans beside the some powerfull proofs as i writed in my article. This tecnique can be define simply as 'shoulder supporting'.So,your bow arm can be like a 'stick' by your chin linking/supporting with any kind of bow just try to support your shoulder even without a bow and try to move your shoulder upside..,what did you see and live? You can almost stop your shoulder up side movement by your chin. This situation effects to your power as 'beeing like a stick' between the grip and the string. It is very simple;isn't it? This was the real technique of the Ottomans and so,this is ''The Ottoman's lost and forgotten, real bow drawing-shooting technique''.We use our thumbrings but this tecnique can be use with any kind of bow or with any size of arrow easily even with a long bow and three fingers. So, you can be more powerfull than you think. So,i recommend to read my article for more information;goodluck and thanks for your interest.

I'm not sure this interpretation is correct since it requires the archer to raise the bow-arm shoulder (the left shoulder in the case of right-handed shooting with the bow in the left hand and the string in the right) and this breaks the straight line from the bow hand to the spine, which means that now the weight of the draw pushing back up the bow arm would have to be borne by the shoulder muscles rather than being supported by the bones (which is much less tiring and allows for better consistency beyond the first couple of shots).

Firstly,my article should be read carefully;please.I've been using this technique for a long time and i'm more powerfull by it.Secondly, this is not an idea or advice as i prooved by the old, powerfull Turkish archery book, this is Mustafa KAni's ''Telhis-i Resailat-i Rumat'' by order of the Sultan Mahmud II..This is the truth of the Ottoman archery war technique and will change every thing in the archery world by the time;you can believe it.So,we can not change the Ottomans history with any personal opinion or archery technique faults;we have to talk by exact historical proofs or findings;isn't it? I've showed this effective technique by my explanations, proofs and videos; In fact;it is very simple and 'The shoulder must not move to up and the chin must be support it' definitely, thats it.So,if the tecnique done properly;the bow arm can be like a 'stick' :It is definetelly like 'beeing a crossbow' between the grip and string. You can test it simply even without a bow as i said before;just try to move-up your (supported by your chin) shoulder. What did you see?...,you can not move your shoulder,..almost :) ,thanks for your interest.

sorry to intervene. I strongly believe the "chin on the shoulder" technique is used for flight archery only, where you have a near 45 degrees angle. Then it feels natural.
For target archery or battlefield archery, where the shooting angle is more straight, I strongly believe this technique was not used. There is a far too big gap between the chin and the shoulder. You cannot simply bring them together, it will look awkward and also destabilise the body.

Mustafa Kani's book is indeed interesting but one has to be careful. There were not many experts left when it was written. It has a distinct flight archery focus. Battle archery has died out early in the 18th century and flight archery was the main focus. You get the impression that even flight and target archery died out and that this book's main purpose is to revive archery.

Hi G?kmen,
If you have some powerfull unique arguments like 'Telhis-i Resailat-i Rumat;i can say.. no problem.

As you know,we can not use the 'personal thoughts' or accept the 'Facts' without any proof if we want to catch the real 'Ottoman Archery Skills'.

This piece of unique art,'Telhis' had written by order of the Sultan Mahmut II.As you know;we can not accept him only a Sultan;he was very very succesfull and powerfull archer with his flight archery records.

This 'Telhis book' contains a lot of old small technical descriptions(small telhis) additionally and had written by old archers, teacher's descriptions, ..and under the archer Sultan's control and you know...,they were not so far from the Puta(Target) shooting like todays.
In fact;they were shooting the Puta with the Siper device at the same time, contrary to popular belief :)

Generally,
the 'Siper'(over draw device) known as a flight archery device even in the modern, nowadays Turkey, unluckily.

But IT IS NOT TRUE;because;this unique 'Telhis' work is talking about this 'target shooting','aiming techniques to the puta with siper' with our 'siper' issue in almost every section of the Telhis and you can read this 'Chin' issue in nearly every where...,like as described in my last article.

For this reason;we can not accept the 'Siper' device for only in the flight Archery.Because there is not any difference with shooting the target with or without the Siper device.
The Siper is not a Toy for only playing in the Flight archery..,it is a deadly weapon part, definitely.

So,the 'Chin technique advantages' could not be left for the flight or Puta(Target)shootings in the past. This was one of their archery secrets and it could not be understood by only looking with the enemies curious eyes so easily..,''Everything is not as it seems'' :)

I am not sure if I understand the technique fully, but it does seem to be similar to a mistake I did when shooting english warbows some years back. These bows were too heavy for me, and I kept letting my bowarm-shoulder collapse and creep upwards. Others have told me that this will lead to injuries, and I think they were right. My shoulder is not as it used to be anymore. By pushing the shoulder out and down, the geometry of the bones are supposed to be better for taking high loads.

I find it very interesting what you say about the siper not being a dedicated flight-item. It seems quite plausible.
Bowyer Golhan
Yes,this is a general archery mistake for the traditional and even for modern archery..same and can be live if you draw a heavier bow.
But..,you have to keep your shoulder positions in the same axis as possible as even in this Ottoman's 'chin technique' and this technique is explained as,

'' Press your both foot to the ground such as standing while praying, the neck should be bent directly without tilting to all four sides, face should be turned over the shoulder without raising it,while the shoulder standing normaly, the chin should be recline to the near cavity of the shoulder.''

in the Telhis-i Resailat-i Rumat, page 60.We can call this old, real and unique technique of the Ottoman!S as,

'' Drawing and shooting by supporting the shoulder with the chin linking'.

So,your shoulder was going to the upward due to the heavy English war bow but this fault could be avoided by the Ottoman's drawing&shooting technique just by supporting the bow arm shoulder with the chin.

Just try to support your bow shoulder by your chin and try to move up even without a bow...,what did you live? :)

And,this this 'chin technique' was so effective that;it had used in all kind of archery shootings by the Ottomans in the past. You can find more detailed informations and a Video in my website.

Thanks,
Mehmet
