hickory for tips in 5 part core
I have hickory and red elm . what the best?
Elm is lighter and has far better steam bending characteristics. It also holds a bend even if it gets wet again. Hickory will uncurl if it gets damp.
thanks for answer
People here have had bad experiences with elm. I would vote for hickory. Use vertical grain, if you must use ring porous wood.
Do you mean to steam/boil the cores?
Are you sure you cannot get mapple, birch or hazel ?

It seems to be the Wych Elm that people have trouble with in the core when it shears.
The American Elms must have more interlocked grain.
The Chinese used Elm for their siyahs which I believe is all he wants to use it for.
