One more ottoman(?) try

Hi,
here my next core. It's a maple, 3 bit core. It should be 42 inches nn.

By my very first attempt to make a hornbow I used epoxy glue for core and horn. Now I still have this horn but no idea how to get the wood out of the grooves. I would like to re-use those horn plates, they are still some 4-5 mm thick, with nice grooves. Any ideas how to do it, or just forget them?

Depending on the epoxy you used it might release with heat.
My last bow had only 2-3mm horn after I reused them from a failed bow. I have a drum sander and managed to glue them to a piece of thick ply and ran the strips through until I had them flat then re-grooved.

Thanks, mikekeswick,
it was UHU endfest, 2-component epoxy.
But it seems to work, although I have to make it really hot.
Hopefully I don't make the horn porous with too much heat.
Would be fine to be able to re-use the horn.

I don't know about horn, but some synthetic glue can be dissolved with acetone..

Ask UHU for a datasheet. Every glue has to have one and it will detail all pertinent properties.

I finally succeeded to rescue the hornstrips. I used hotairgun(?)to make them really hot and then I was able to take the wood off the grooves.
I just really hope it did not disturb the horn.
I have to get some acetone to get the rest of the glue away.
The next thing will be grooving the core...

May I know whats the result with the epoxy for core and horn.. why did you abandon the idea? it seems the bond is good no?
pcoutin
it might not take all the bending
veki
I really don't know, if it would work, because that one broke in the core.
I think it would work, but somehow I now have the feeling, it's not the right thing to use epoxy to built historical bow...?

off course, just curious with the result.. but if its work, I think its ok.. for example, using titebond for siyah or grip splice.. I'm intent to use it on my next project for practical reason..
mikekeswick
Titebond etc is not suitable for hornbow making. It won't withstand any heat needed for corrections and also the gelling of traditional glues makes splicing a lot easier.
A.Haydar
thanks for the info.. I'll stick to organic-glue then..

Hi,
here update to this project.
This has been seasoning now 4 months, I try to wait two more months before
I begin tillering. I didnot even try to put the ends together, I just left it as C-form.
There is a bit twist in the core, but should be easy to work out.

By the way, there is not really living hier in Forum!

And one more picture!

How is your bow coming along?
veki
hi mikekeswick,

this one is up and running now for two years. This is also covered with birchbark, having about 58 lb by 27'.

Beautiful bow! I like the profile, a bit different from others. Seems like its lot less stressed since the kasan bend is not so aggressive. Does is hold reflex better?
veki
Ok, I have to say, that kasan bend is like this by my mistake. It was more"aggressive", but as I had to remove the first coat of birchbark, I had to use heat
to do it and by doing this, kasan bend lost some of its angle. But anyhow, it is shooting well.
