Sinew in Canada
Were can I find sinew (any kind) in Canada? I dont think I can find a cow processing plant near me so I will probly have to order. I already e-mailed a few places in America to get sinew but they said they are not allowed to ship animal products across border.
What about slaughterhouses or the deerhunters (hunters). Canada should have a good resource of tendons. Hunting season has begun, I think.
Its allways worth visiting one of the Native Canadians craft supply sites like this one :

The deer backstrap dosn't look too bad..... Good luck.

They?ve got processed sinew too! Shipping to Europe was straightforward so there shouldn?t be any problems. Nice people!

I dont think there is any processing plant around me, anyways I dont drive yet so I cant just go around looking.
I will try that N. American craft store prices seem great! Btw why is buffalo sinew cheaper? it says there is 3 tendons in a package but on the bottom it says sold by the peice. So I'm not sure if the price $4.99 is for 1 tendon or for 3?

I was reading about international shipment it it say that they will not do international shipping unless the merchandise you order is over $200. Guesse I need to find somewere else.
Jaap Koppedreyer ('Yumi' [[email protected]]) should be able tp supply you.
Stephen just before I e-mail that guy, would you know the price he's selling the sinew and what length? I dont want to e-mail him and find out that his prices are too high and say I dont what them anymore, just sounds kind of rude.
Thanks
Thanks
Actually, Jaap is a friend of mine who uses sinew. I am not certain that he is prepared to sell it, but you can ask. I have no idea about prices.
Hi Matt. I know Jaap quite well too. He teaches me bowmaking skills. You can ask him but I'm quite sure he won't sell any just because it's hard to get good sinew and processing takes a lot of time. We use only leg tendons from deer moose caribou etc. It's time consuming tearing sinew as you know, so parting with all that work is hard to do. If you live in Ontario I can give you names of places to try for legs and perhaps that will work. Jaap says cattle tendons are not as good because the quality is poor compared to the others.
He should know because of the amounts he goes thro. You can e-mail me thro bowsforpros.com or call (519) 469-3467. Hope this helps, Steve T.

Hello Steve T, I'm getting deer sinew from another man on this site his name is Eppo Walgen (thank-you!). I will be sure to e-mail you when my next sinewing job comes up.
I know it will take a while to get all that sinew shredded up but hey, its winter time and all my bow making is done in the garage. It wont be until it gets warmer when Im going to start tillering this bow so I got plenty of time.
Thanks

I am glad that you found some sources of sinew. Having a friend that hunts and is willing to give you the sinew is the best. Here are few others that I have found in the Greater Vancouver area.
Beef tendon is sold in some of the asian markets. The T and T chain is a good source. The tendon is on the small side at about 5 to 6 inches and is sold both raw and cooked. You want the raw and will need to dry it. The asian markets are also a good source for dried fish maw that can be used to make hide glue. (Or you can go to Lee Valley Hardware and just buy the hide glue by the pound.)
It is intermittent, but I have lucked out on occasion at some of the pet food stores (Bosley is where I have the best luck) and found dried sinew/tendon being sold as a dog treat. The type will vary but sometimes they will get deer or ostrich which is easier to work than cow tendon.
Finally, I haven't bought from him, but Canadian Bowyer Rodney Wright sells sinew from his website.
Hope this helps you.
