About 1,5 month ago i finished my Korean bow.
Now it is ready for sinew.
I hope i have time this weekend to glue on my sinew.
I think the bow looks pretty nice,...i will hope that it works.
The groovings from the core and horn don?t fit exactly, but i think that the bowyers also doesn?t made it so exactly as i did.
You will also see at the "Hornbow Making Video"
I trust the fishbladder glue.

Here are some Pictures from my baby.

I would like to ask you a couple of questions:

How long are the horn pieces?
What sort of wood did you use for the belly and the siyahs?
What are the dimensions (thickness of horn, core, overall lenght, width...)?
How many courses of sinew you?re going to use and what is your desired draw weight?

Thank you and good luck!

J.

Hi, Johnny Winter

The bow is about 49" around the belly.
The core is made of bamboo and siyahs of acacia, like the the traditional way.
Traditional they use also mulberry for siyahs.
Thickness: Horn : about 3/16", flatten out to the end
Core : Bamboo 2/16"

I think i put 3 or 4 layers sinew on the bow.

You can see older pics on "Making Bows Arrows an Stuff"
"Korean Hornbow Process" and "Korean HB full circle"
from wolfhorn.

Hi wolf,
Best wishes from t?rkiye. This is a nice work. I want to ask you a guestion. On your bow I saw 2 chelik. İs this condition from your tradition or your new conception. Sorry my bad english. I hope you may understand ıt.
Romain
Nice work !

I'm surprised though that you already got such an impressive reflex before even adding the sinew. After the sinew dries and reflexes the bow even more, you might have a difficult time stringing it.
wolfhorn123
Hello

Arsilan, what means "chelik" ??

Romain, i have seen Korean Bows they cross at the nocks.
But i will fix it at the nocks and then i put sinew on it, and let it dry.

But for sure, it will be very difficult to tillering and string this bow.
I?ll hope that it works, we will see.
arsilan
Hi Wolf
The bone pieces which between two horn strip is named as "chelik" by the turks.
Rapsod
Chelik in serbian means steel.
arsilan
also in t?rkiye ıt means steel.
Samuraiwarrior
wolfhorn, you should thin down the acacia siyahs. THey look to be too thick.
At the bottom of this website, you can see the thickness of the differnt parts . They are taken at around 1" apart.
wolfhorn123
Hello Samuraiwarrior.

Are these measurements from your broken korean bow ??
Can I trust these measurements ?

My siyahs are about 7/16" thick.
The core with horn together about 6/16"

When will you tiller and string your bow ?
Samuraiwarrior
Yes, they are from the broken bow. You should be able to trust them, although David Maclean says the bow and bowyer weren't very good. It gives you a good start. The siyah part near the core should remain thin like the bamboo. Then it should slowly thicken and go into the tip. The tip should be 1/2" thick.

Hi Wolfhorn
dont forget me and my guestion please. I m in curious.
Alam ed Din, Adnan
I think what Arsilan meant was thethird piece of horn inserted behind the handle. (in between the two celiks)Is this style used traditionally in Korea in the past or present? And how safe it is to patch in such a large piece of horn.
Bede
I have seen Chinese bows with a separate piece of horn covering 75% of the hand-grip. This was usually done when the horn for the arms was too short. I am sure it was done with other bows too like Turkish ones for the same reason. Most surviving bows were well made, but not everyone could afford top quality. If it shot well, it would do.
wolfhorn123
Hello Arsilan,

I put the peace of horn into the handle, because my hornstrips are a little bit to short.

Thanks to samuraiwarrior.
arsilan
thank you guys for your contributes. I have never seen turkish bow in turquie done like this. But there is a bow covered with horn only % 50 of limb. Desbite I have many short horn pieces I couldnt try to cover limb. But now I will try it as soon as possible.
Samuraiwarrior
Wolfhorn, I didn't answer your question, sorry.
The one on my website was taken apart and rebuilt. But right now it is very close to being ready for sinew. How long are you going to let yours season? We might end up finishing them at the same time.
BTW, do you have birchbark to cover the sinew? Or are you going to leave it plain?
Also, you should plan to put a lot of sinew wrappings near the handle and any end of a horn strip. I am doing my handle the same way, with a bigger piece in the center. I am going to wrap every point which thehorn ends, and near the tips because my pin nocks may not be wide enough.
Good luck,
SW

Hello SW,

I am not sure when i put on my sinew,
I am very busy at the moment in my job.

But i want also put on birchbark on my bow, if it works.

Thanks for answering my question.

Also good luck.

Hello wolfhorn 123,

I have a question:

How long is your handle, and how thick and wide is it ?

i hope you understand my question, my english is very bad
Samuraiwarrior
Eldoro
On regular korean bows, the wooden handle is 1/2" thick in the center. They are 6" long. The center of the handle is 13/16" wide, and the ends of the handle taper to 1" wide.
Eldoro
Thank you Samuraiwarrior ,

Do you know more about the wide of the bammbocore ?

I?ve got the Tradional Bower?s Bible 1-3 in german, but I can?t find any exact facts (data) and I?ve read theards about the korean bow here, but I can?t find facts , too!
It will be very nice if you can help me :D
