The drawing is taken originally from a Chinese archeology text. The original picture was a tentative reconstruction showing how the object might have been mounted on a bow.
This reconstruction was done by Shi Zhangru, a famous archaeologist of the Shang remains at Anyang. He was very much into reconstructing the things that were excavated there.
I do not hold with this reconstruction, although I have played about with it myself and reproduced it in 'Chinese Archery'
The element with two hooks that Shi placed at the grip of the bow should in fact be attached to a belt around a chrioteer's waist. It is used to hold the inner two reins of the two chariot horses, which act as the 'brakes'.

Gentlemen,
Thanks for the input.
I had seen the pic while looking at this book on ebay. It triggered a memory of a past discussion so
i had to browse the archives to check it out.

I think it was useful to correct the deflection torsion. In one of the pictures here:http://www.atarn.org/chinese/thingies/t ... llowup.htm
I saw a deviation from the axis , which leads me to think of technique tsunomi.
It can be useful if the bow is bent too close to handle or to adjust the balance of power between the arms. Metal is malleable, and they could adapt and shape, depending on the specifics of each bow.
I have some ideas, about the usefulness of bells ; They may provide clues about how the bow works, but I believe in fighting or hunting situations, were blocked. Bells sounded just in ceremonies or during training.
decrease handshok ?
Excuse my English, but I think the message was sent.
