see cut hornstrips - full of them
just wanted to show you guys the finished buffalo hornstrips i usually make from time to time .
i recalled from the time i arrive here as a newby -atarn up to now i would say somethign like -sitting lurking here listenning for 3 years- before i can confidently arrive to this. . however, i may still be doing something wasteful from makers point of view .
one day im gong to be back to really discuss in detail about cutting the horns rightfully. seems as though there are many myth involved regarding cutting
though gone are the days that you can just get dirty /bulky raw horns from peole somewhere and ran the risk of guesswork ,thats for sure.

Do you know that you can use the inner circle of the horn too? If the horn is grown wide enough and not to bulky you could cut there shorter and more reflexed strips. Thats what I need for the very short Scythian and some of the Greek bows. Maybe they are used for Korean bows too.
Michael
inner circle? im sorry
i dont understand !!
i would appreciate it if you can give us a drawing of what you mean?
so you are saying beside large main strip which i can say i get basically
(a) 18 , 19, 20 inches.plus length
(b) 1.5 to 1.75 in width
i can still get so called extra short strips.?
what short strips are your referring to ,how short and what is the lenght
width and thickenss of this possible no. 2 strip may i ask?
perhaps you got to sacrifice the lenght (a) in order to give way to
a second strip perhaps? or it jsut got nothing to do with it and doesnt
affect the main strip anyway?
and at what minimum length of a raw horn these could be done anyway having the possible luck of having 2 decent strips per horn ?
would appreciate sharing these with us.
thank you
best,
pete .
what kind of short strips is yet still consider acceptable.???.
can anybody give some strips measurments of its length and width?
let us say so called -short Scythian and some of the Greek bows -as redhawk is saying
anybody here please. ?
best,
Pete
Which is a second choice because always narrower shorter and supposed to be not as good as the outside curve.
About width length and thickness it depends on the bow style, length and strength.....
You know all these things...
I can't be more accurate i am not an expert in composite bow making...
I?m talking of the inner curve of the horn. As I posted if the horn is wide enough you should be able to cut strips in a length of 30-40cm and in a width of 3-4 cm out of this inner curve. If a horn is wide enough it is not a second choice, usually the inner curve is less stressed than the outer curve.
For Scythian and Greek hornbows 35cm in length is useful.
Michael
redhawk
you are talking only about
a) 13.75 inches in length and
b) 1.2 inches in width
that you are saying already acceptable for such bow
and the word : inner circle. might mean ,still going side by side with the main curvature of the horn that you are trying to get. sharing right alone side by side ,
its jsut alike saying a very wide strips and cut /split into two
thats why you said - if the width is wide enough.
no confusion now- its yet within the main curvature of the horn ,same place -no other place of the horn
i thought you are referring in other areas of the raw horn
this is possible . presuming the horns happens to be very straight ,very long no flaws even to its edges.
and i presume the width turns out to be
exceptionally wide too to make it posible for such.
i still say the main strips might have to share a little sacrifice
having a more narrow first strip.
first strip is the =father, second strip i would say is the "son "
or perhaps i should describe it as -'twin'
sorry guys i dont know how to put it in better english to describe it. .
i dont suppose you get two prime happy ,lucky lenght main strips in one horn curvature.
i hope this is clear. and for me i consider this rather than an exception
to the rule rather than THE -rule.
now be extra careful to perform such feat. otherwise you might find yourelf in an awkward
position of not been even been able to get a decent prime 'father"strip instead. and happened to damage the "father " strip instead.
anyway ,in the land of plenty , with lots of smaller horns here we dont do such feat. because we dont need to. and we dont need to get 'sides' strips as well like mr.good mr x dealer does. we just get a smaller horns to cut main beam -thats all. no risk.
because such strips is meant for bow purpose in mine.
as a matter of fact, strips that happened to fell down to 16 inches
ending up 15 to 14 inches in length and still having them at decent 1.5inches widthi normally cast it aside and
have now abig bulk collection and consider them ' substandard " and 2nd grade. and much willing to talk into giving a much lower price. - done strips that is - no risk.
but for so called greek and sythian measurements. , well i guess
it might be consider prime.lucky for them.
now any person here doing greek and sythian hornbow (even commerically ???)
- pls.raise your hand,!
i dont think there is.
most people i come across is jsut simply 'lengthy hungry' that they
want as large as 25 inch at least or more -done strips.
pete
for your viewing pleasure
hope the picture came thru
But I?m still not quite sure if we?re talking about the same thing, please have a look at the Adam Karpowicz? "Cutting the horn-Step by step", it is within the ATARN?content guide. Adam teaches you how to cut 4 strips out of one horn!!!
But you are right: there are almost no water-buffalos in Europe or in the US, so for me such a horn is a very precious good and I really thank all these waterbuffalos for their horns.
For the Scythian and Greek hornbows I don?t need large hornstrips.

Pete, very interesting what you are thinking about father and son hornstrips.
= yes jsut a figure of speech.

= yes im not sure either ahahaha!

= yap i'lltake a look again,
but its all about what kind of strips peole ar talking about.
small strips can also be called strips. too
side strips like what dicks is doing can also be called strip too.
and i believe it should be very large horns in the firt stpe and in perfect condition in order to be able to do that feat. and not all horns are like that.
But you are right: there are almost no water-buffalos in Europe or in the US, so for me such a horn is a very precious good and I really thank all these waterbuffalos for their horns.
= in the land of plenty peole dont go to such thinking of savings.
but in the land of few. - they are more expert becasue they strive to find ways to save.
i heard some have to boil them as as just to be able to use twisted strips to have them straightend.

= okay confirm
be back later.
