How is the angle of the siyah related to bow's performance?

From what I've seen, for instance, manchurian hornbows had conspicuously pronouned siyahs.

However, many of the Turkish and Korean hornbows were in rather circular form, in which the line and the shape of the siyahs "conform" to the entire shape of the bow.

How does the angle of the siyah affect the performance of the bow?

In your description of the bows, are you referring to the shapes of strung or unstrung bows?

In general terms, the mass of the ear has more effect than the shape. The reflex of the limbs and recurvature of the ends of the bow have strong effects on performance.

I?m right now doing a great research about different types of Greek hornbows. The Greek bowyers seemed to have been focused on this angle much more than the bowyers of other cultures. I would go so far, that the Greek bowyers were persuaded that the angles of the recurves to the limb and to the string are much more important for the performance than design.......
If you have look on these different Greek hornbow-designs you could be of the opinion that bowery is geometry.
We?ll check out what it is about and we?ll post the results here.

Bede, the angle between limb and siyah of an unstrung bow determines the angle of the same bow strung.
It is very important for the performance to make low mass-siyahs. For to keep a siyah straight and to stay in line anyway, bowyers cut the siyahs into stable shapes. The design of the cross-section of the Turkish-hornbow is absolutely perfect.

I was referring to the shape of the strung bows.

Have you read this:
Kooi, B.W. 1996. Functioning of ears and set-back at grip of Asiatic bows. Journal of the Society of Archer-Antiquaries, 39:73-77.

It can be downloaded here:

Would you tell me that this magazine is a real paper magazine or running on internet? I haven't met this magazine neither on internet nor anywhere. Where can I find it?
Bede
Tanakan,
The Journal of the Society of Archer-Antiquaries is a real printed paper publication available to members and member institutions. In general the author's of individual articles have copyright and can permit the publication on the web of their work.

The Journal is published once a year and posted to members. There is also a newsletter for short items.

I do not think it is an exaggeration to say that the Journal of the Society of Archer Antiquaries is the premier periodical on the subject in the world. Many libraries with good scientific journals will archive back copies.

Someone associated with a university with access to an information sharing service may be able to retrieve back articles.
