Hi everybody , mi first post. This pics is from L.Bottomley & A.P.Hopson book "Arms and armour of the samurai"-Brompton Corp.Books 1988.This is very nice hankyu bow ! :D

I mean that is from province Kaga (Maeda family) about 1730 .This bow is original ,not replica.

No, this is only pics from this book . Another pics are as usualy about japan long bows.I read about short japan bows from whale bones , but without pics...

What is the length of that short bow. Is it a short bow in non japanese sense too?
I don?t know. I only estimate froml lenght of his arrows. :roll:

Very interesting, thanks for the pictures. One of the short bows looks similar to a bow from Jack Farrell?s collection.
The larger bow looks like it may be gift for newborn son, along with arrows as they have blunt tips, and smaller looks as if it is used for the indoor archery games...They seem to be in quite good condition.

According to the box with the arrows, this is a set of 'yooryuu' (楊柳) bow and arrows for the popular indoor game 'willow bow shooting'. It was a competition between men and women and had some refined sexual connotation.
I have a book with the rules (in Japanese). The introduction says that it was a Chinese game that came to Japan in the Tang Dynasty. (I translated it in 'Chinese Archery'.)
