hello guys. i am new to horsebowery, and i have been exploring ATARN for a while, i like it :D i cant get any horn or really any good materials, except boo. but i was wondering, if i got a strip of boo, is there any way to flatten it out so it has less of a crown?? then i would waste far less in sanding it down.... thankyou :)

I have noticed that heat treating bamboo belly will somewhat flatten it. I am not sure if it works on the nodes tough. I think one could use pressure to increase the effect. I would be cautious, since I think the nodes would split easier when using pressure.

From what I haver read here and what I have experienced, trying to flatten boo is pretty wasteful excerise. Better choose a boo that has a diameter of 5-6 inches. This would solve your problem.

I tried heat treating boo. Problem is it becomes weak while flattening and if done with haste tends to break along the length.

You might end up wasting lots of time & cores... :)

Many bowyers have sucessfully laminated strips of bamboo into bows in the style of the Japanese. Bamboo makes good cores, backs and bellies for built up bows. But perhaps bamboo is not the best material for the core of a hornbow. -j-
