This is an ibex horn bow I ordered from a Mongolian bowyer. It's my brother's Christmas present. The siyahs have horn V spliced into wood ,with one end carved into a horse head ..... The back is covered with birch bark. The siyahs are 6" to the nock and the bow is 56" nock to nock unstrung.

I ordered it from mogoltravel.com

The wood in the siyahs and the core ,is they say, birch. I ordered the 60 pound one ,it's probably closer to 100 pounds .It took both of us just to string it.

I checked my records I actually ordered a 70 pound draw, but I shoot 70# all the time , guess I'll have to put it on a scale. Maybe they sent a 70 kilo draw bow. :)

I got some information on the bowyer , Thanks to Peter . Peter runs the Mandarin Mansion website http://www.mandarinmansion.com/main.htm ,And I am getting a Chinese horn bow through Peter . He sent me an email ,this is what he said and sent ;

"Interesting, I know the maker of your Mongolian bow personally! I met him on a traditional archery festival in South Korea. A pretty funny chap, he couldn't speak any English but I had a lot of fun with him nonetheless. His name is Tumurhuu Batmunkh and he is head of the Mongolian archery association, former champion and bow-maker. I've seen them hit relatively small targets with an exact same bow on 80 metres.

I will send you some pictures of Tumurhuu (in both his daily outfit and traditional Mongolian suit), me & Tumurhuu, more Mongolian bows, and a Mongolian target."

Not for the first time, we see a Mongol archer shooting off the back of the hand with thumb draw. I guess it just goes to show there is no right way and wrong way but rather, what suits the archer.

Hi man, your bow canot full draw, or this is maximum draw of this bow ? :)
rwelch
No it's not the bow , it's me .. :)
I ordered 70 pound draw weight witch I shoot all the time, but this bow seems to be much heaver than that ,, maybe 70 kilograms ?
Dusan
yes, i understand, but this weight is for another heavy bow funs chalenge ! Sinew + wood + horn bow have much comfortable draw then fiberglass or all wood bows.Good luck with bow .

I doubt it would be 70 kilograms, that is roughly 150 lbs, a true war weight. Possibly it is colder or less humid where you are compared to where it was made, driving up the poundage.
I especially like the horns inserted into the ears.

I dont like horse head in syah but i like haevy bows .

Strung it up again today ,much warmer today a humid .We could actually draw it today ! It pulled 75# at 28" and 80# at 30" ohhh and 85# at 32"..

The arrows weigh 650 grains.

2 weeks ago I had to check a hornbow made by Tumurhuu, cause the birchbark has detached at some spots of the bow?s back. I repaired it with hide- glue.
But anyway a very well and traditionally crafted bow, no fakes.
The bow is very hard, in the 80-90lbs range at 30" draw.
The owner of this bow has begun some "body building".
I guess these Mongolian hornbows had to be made with such high drawweights, cause they weigh(physically) so much.

I can understand the archer undertaking some bodybuilding regime, supportive and connective tissue needs to be conditioned for regular use of strong bows. One of our local bowyers began a project to make and use a longbow of 160# and he too worked up to this weight with regular sessions in the gym.

You are right I definitely have to work up to being to be able shoot the bow regularly .Just look at the ease at witch Tumurhuu draws his bow , and he is 62 years old
