Any ideas what we can use instead natural sinew?
Hello every body!! I know that this forum is about natural materials and ancient methods of making bows but I'm wondering if there are any new materials we can use instead of sinew and what king of glue? For e.g. Grozer is using something but he doesn?t share with his knowledge. Is any body has experience in this matter?
On an English TV program about Roman ballistas (?) they determined that polyester fiber is the closest modern alternative to sinew. It can be laminated with most two component resins available (epoxy, polyester, urethane, acrylic) but the fiber needs to be of the type specifically made for reinforcement.
And I still don't know how well it can actually compete with sinew as that is known to be one of the top materials for storing elastic energy in the high strain category.

The action of natural sinew is that it absorbs water and glue and relaxes when heated to body temperature and then contracts when it dries out. Added to this are its very high resistance to extension when dry.
The resistance to extension is paralleled by losts of modern materials such as glass and carbon fibre. It is the interaction with water and glue that is almost unique to sinew, and doesn't seem (yet) to have been duplicated with man-made materials.
Although most ATARN contributors love the horn and sinew bows, we all welcome the convenience and durability (and lower cost!) of bows made with modern materials.

i has do more test but stiill not enough, some one see i am in 4 years never make a hornbow successful so stop i do these practice
i decide shere some phenomena when i do
the sinew can be expand(expanse,like the corn expand in hot you are eat it in the cinema) more, seemed double bulk and reduce length,from temperature and acidic liquid, if short time form the body temperature, it need about 6-10 hours(not very exact time), and i use a rubber water bottle full the hot water(aboil), put the sinew in a steel boX or a plastic bottle on the hot water bottle, use the bedquilt keep the temperature , the temperature hot than my body temperature, also i use this way make the gule, some a in the weeting, the sunlight wiil give the water very warm temperature in estival, also the stone hot in sunlight and hot longer time, maybe use stone container in aboil water or on the fire make some temperature, or some microwave oven has 60' temperature you can choice boil it , it is how make some temperature,there are a method use your finger test the temperature, i am forget it ,
the temperature and acidic liquid will expand the sinew cubage,in china has vinegar for food , if the acidity too much the sinew will expand too, also you can soaking the sinew in 15% h2o2 or use hight temperature hot more time , the brine can reductive it , it will prove the sinew is a sponge or a box you can put water and glue in it ,
a problem, what material joint(glued) the sinew strings you can form hammer, screw destroy it so you can make the strings, there are some tinpot lixivium after you soaking the sinew in gule long time? if you soakng a few time the sinew will not expand, and what acidity the glue well be right what size aperture the glue can into it ?
