arrow spine for horsebows

Does the desired arrow spine differ for horsebows than other bows?

For a centershot modern recurve, I usually go about 10 pounds over the draw weight. For a traditional bow shot off the hand, I go a few pound under the draw weight.

Does a horsebow prefer a lighter spine or a heavier spine than draw weight? Does it make a difference whether you are shooting thumb or three fingers?

Thanks,
Jim

Arrow spine matters much less when using a thumb-draw technique, since you twist the bow upon release so that the arrow theoretically doesn't touch the bow. I can fire arrows spined for my 50 lb longbow from a 25 lb one using a thumb-draw accurately.

I don't have any experience with mounted archery, but I would assume there is no difference.

It depends how you shoot. Thumb draw the arrow is usually spined higher than bow weight. Mediterranean release requires arrows spined lower.

There are several things you can do with spine when shooting with a thumb ring.

You can use under-spined arrows according to the Western system. They will usually shoot farther to the left for a right-handed archer.

You can use over-spined arrows and shoot further to the right.

This allows you to choose which aiming system you wish to use. One way you can use the left-hand edge fo the bow and the other you can use the right hand.

The real difference from Western archery is that the arrows will fly consistently because the initial deflection is not so great. This means you have more of a choice in how you select your arrows.
