Without horn...?
Hello, everyone.
I wonder if it possible to create a horsebow / Flightbow without fiberglas or horn? Can I use lignostone or bamboo for the belly?
The reason for my question is: In the historical class, I can not use fiberglas for flightshooting (Only targetshooting), and the horn is just too expensive.

The advantage of the horn/wood/sinew composite construction is its ability to bend a large amount and store significant quantities of energy. If you use less flexible materials, then the bow will have to be longer and with less reflex. A bows like this have been made, but these are not ideal characteristics for a flight bow.
Note that the traditional horn-bow designs developed to make best use of the available materials for the requirements of the day (fairly heavy hunting and war bows, and later flight bows). These designs are not optimal for lighter-draw bows from less-elastic materials. (I don't know the characteristics of lignostone, but is does not sound very flexible).

Mr Moen; You can make a horse bow out of just wood and sinew. Wood can be made to do amazing things when backed with sinew. This is sort of an intermediary step to horn bows that should be tried anyway. The production time is significantly reduced.
And why don't you experiment with what you have? Long ago it was mentioned that bovines from cold climates had acceptable horns for hornbows.
It sort of matters where you are trying to get to; satisfaction and good performance or the highest possible. The main competition for most of us is within ourselves. -j-

The Koreans made good sinew/bamboo/wood composites. They may not be as good as the best horn bellied composites, but they are worth the effort of trying.
For lighter classes, they may perform very well.

Thank you guys.
And Lignostone is a laminated densified wood. It consists of beech veneers,
which are joined together with thermosetting synthetic resins under pressure and heat. And its NOT easy to bend. But very strong. I've seen it used as a substitutt for horn in Egyptian bow. But maybe i must try bamboo, maple/ash, sinew..

Here is an example what you can make without horn.
This is sinew backed bulletwood (outdoor floring). It is 121cm nock to nock and 44# at 65cm draw. The center has 2.5cm deflex.
The bow is 4.5cm wide after fades with 3.5cm wide back.
The ears are overweight and will be worked in the future.

Cool.. Do you have a unbrased pics from that bow?
I have none handly, but the center part is 3cm deflex and the ears look like in that picture.
I have not yet finnished the bow... but I have 3 other in semi finished state after that.
