Korean paper quivers
Hello,
I've readed that some Korean quivers are made of paper. Does anyone know something about materials and techniques used in their construction?
TIA
Gianrico

Hi Gianrico,
Yes, the paper quivers are fairly common, but special. I have one that was made for me by my Geuk-hwan Park, the paralyzed horn bowyer. It is made out of hanji, which is Korean handmade mulberry paper. Large sheets of it are coated with glutinous rice glue, and then they are wrapped around a wood core form. Many layers are done like that until the desired thickness is achieved. The bottom is plugged with wood and the top has a similar plug made, but it is removeable and attached by some kind of cord. The outside is decorated, usually with Chinese character calligraphy.

Thomas, sounds very nice, you said that they are very special are they made for any special event or for someone special. Can you show pictures.

They are almost always specially made, either as a gift for someone (as in my case) or by special order. Mostly, I think for the former, although that is just a guess.
I'll take some pics a bit later and post them.

Sorry it took me so long to get this posted, but my wife had my digital camera. Here are some pics of my ji juntong (紙箭筒--paper arrow case).
One more.

Very nice Thomas, thanks and well worth the wait.

James,
Glad to show them. I hope some people become inspired enough to try and make one.
The hanji is coated with glue and is then wrapped around a wood core. It is allowed to dry and another layer, and then another, and so on. When all has dried, the core is removed. I think the outside is coated with sesame oil or something after it has dried.

Sounds like high quality papier m?ch?. I know that armour and helmets were made from it in China and I think Korea too.
i has hear add the vitriol to paper , the paper will like the stone
Thomas, can you give us dimensions, you got me hooked and I would like to try to make one, and do you know of a good place to get the mulberry paper large enough to make one.

James,
Here are the dimensions for mine:
Paper tube section:
L: 34"
W: 2-3/8"
H: 1-3/8" (it is oval, hence the W & H dimensions)
Wall thickness: 3/16"
Plug/top:
Insert section: 2" x 1.5" x 5/8"
Cap/base section: 2.5" x 1.75" x 3/8"
The paper is easy enough to get here in Korea, but I'm not sure about other places. I imagine you could do just as well with other types of paper.
Good luck!
Thomas
