Sinew, Hide GLue, Horns, and TIme --- Oh My!
So far my experiences has been with simple long-bow styled self bows and bamboo backed bows. I got excited to make a asiatic style bow. I have order my Horns from Peter Cua, and deer sinew and hide glue from ebay. While I wait for it all to arrive I have begun reading more and more posting on this site and I am getting very nervious.
Someone wrote that you need to wait 1 to 6 months for the hide glue on sinew wrapped horns to dry. I can;t image waiting 6 months just to find if I succeeded. I think back to my first four self bows that snapped on the tillering tree.
It also sound like there are a million things I could do wrong with Hide Glue which would ruin my very expensive horn strips.
I need some advise as to how I can make my first attempt at a asiatic horn bow little more manigable. I will use fibre glass and other modern element for my first bow if necessary.
Anyone have any advise. Also, does anyone have any suggestions for books and, better yet videos, I could buy to make this project the best it could be.

You should decide what style of bow you want, Korean, Turkish, Hungarian, Mongol, Chinese, etc. the list goes on.
Pick up the videos by Thomas D. The making of the KOrean horn bow, 4hours of good info.
Tell us what kind of bow you want to make and I am sure more advise will come.

Don't mean to sound totally helpless but which style would you recommend for my first attempt? I guess I am partial to the Turkish, but honestly I just want to succeed in making the bow in under 6 months. So I ask you which design is easiest.
The only other charaacteristic is that I would prefer is a bow that is under 50#. I guess now I sound helpless and weak. My Long bow is 45# and it is perfect. I read about these 100# horn bows and I can;t imagine how I could ever draw such a thing.
Thanks

It would be difficult to complete a bow in under 6 months. But if that is what you want, it may be achievable.
You could do the Turkish bow, you just need to be patient while putting things together.
Do you have wood and glue so that you may start making the bow core now?
You could tiller a bow to #50, I doubt it would be close to 100# before you started tillering

I thought I was joking when I said under 6 months, I was hoping to have one ready for my August trip to Big Bear. But if that is the time it take then that is the time I will give the project. If it take 8 months or even a year. My first or foremost goal is to have nice bow that I will be proud to shoot. If I rush it and fail I have truely waisted my time.
So what do I got right now? Not that much.
I have some hickory, ash, and maple boards and URAC 185 glue. I also have a 72" bamboo slat and a osage blank. I have a local hardwood store that carried many exotic woods.
I should have 15 hanks of deer leg sinew by next week. I have yet to get Hide Glue, still researching. Titebound makes a liquid hide glue the advertise a GENUINE HIDE GLUE. Sounds too good to be true. Any opinion on that?

If you have the time, take 1 year for the bow. You can rush it, but there's no telling it will turn out good.
You could use the maple for a core.
Don't use URAC 185
Go to a grocery store and buy Unflavored Gelatin and use that as hide glue. It is one of the best glues you could use.
Also, don't use the Liquid Hide Glue, It takes way to long to dry and it is hard for it to set up and start grabbing the parts.
Are you set on a Turkish bow?
If so, you might make it anywhere from 45 to maybe 50".

You have got to be kidding me. After all my research of the glory of Hide GLue (which will cost me about $10 for two ounces) I am to buy a 50 cent box of gelatin from my local super market??? OK, I'll do it. Any specific brand? Jell-O?
As for a turkish, I am not really set on anything so much that I could not be pursuded to do something else.
So what do i do first? Get the video or are you planning on walking me through this step by step for the next year?
Also, I must assume that the vast majority of this year will be spent waiting for thing to set and dry and such. How many acutal hour of labor does it take?
Thank you for all the responses.

Jell-o, Knox, or store brand are all very similar. I think it is cheaper than buying most low grade hide glue.
You can get the video or read around first to get a feel for how the bow goes together. I could walk you through most of the steps. But asking Yokhua or Adam Karpowicks would be better. As I haven't actually made a Turkish bow yet.
I have seen estimates that put a horn bow around 100 hours but that could greatly vary and it would depend on what materials you start with and what tools you use.

I will try to contact Yokhua or Adam Karpowicks but so far I can;t image better communication that you, when do you sleep? Personally I am going to bed now but I will write more tomorrow afternoon.
By the way I assume Yokhua or Adam Karpowicks are member of this forum, if not how do I reach them.
Also, where do I get the video?
Also I found this a while ago which is what started me on this adventure:
http://www.primitiveways.com/pt-composite_bow.html
What do you think of this guy work? Should I try to emulate it?

Yokhua is a member of this forum, I don't know if Adam has signed up yet.
I'll still try to help you as best I can. I live in Mountain Time -7:00. And I sleep from midnight to 9.
The video can be bought from Thomas D. Or you can buy my VHS, as I have replaced them with Thomas' DVDs.
I kind of like the bow at PrimitiveWays, but they don't give a lot of details.
I suggest you read around,
atarn.org
hornbow.com
maybe bambooarrow.com
http://p072.ezboard.com/btraditionalarchery
and e-mails to Thomas D for questions or Video at
[email protected]
you could PM me if you are interested in buying my VHS.

Hey!??? :?Samuraiwarrior wrote:

I think I'm as shocked as poor green chicken. I've been reading up about fish bladder and making sinew glue... can I really use gelatin instead? I was going to try and use the fish bladder?
I'm planning to make a 70-80# bow: either 59" Hunnish, or a 60" Maygyar bow (modelled off a non-composite I got off CsabaG).
Will gelatin work with these also?
Also, you suggested maple over the bamboo for the core. Do you have a reason for this? For authenticity?
I'm waiting on some horn. I've got my own Roo sinew. I was going to get started on the wooden core.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated... I'm even greener than the chicken  :)
