Korean Hornbow
Hello everybody,
I have one very important question about the bamboocore and horn of an korean hornbow.
I hope somebody can answer this question:
1) Tapers the bamboocore from the end of the oak handle (about 0,1875 inch thick) to the beginning or to the end of the splice, to about 0,125 inch ??
2) Or has the hole bamboocore the same thicknes (about 0,125 inch) ??
When i take a look at www.hornbow.com then "Cross section Korean bow limb" it seems to me that the core tapers from the end of the handle to the beginning of the bamboosplice, then when the top from the siyah beginns it tapers thicker, or it tapers thicker where the bamboowood ends ??
3) The same i think is with the hole horn: Thickest part is at the handle and then it tapers lower across the hole horn to the end of the hole limb.
I hope you guys understand my question ?,...my english is not the best.
Because i want start to make an new korean hornbow.
The first one i tried to make a few years ago (if somebody remember) , broke.
I already have the bamboo (for the core), the siyahs (green wood acacia), and green oak wood for the handle. (The traditional way).
Hope for answers,
Thanks

Why green oak ? You need dry oak. Green acacia is only for best curved qualities. Here in our central Europa is lot of acacia wood. But what is courious mi Korean hornbow have syiahs from bamboo- not from acacia...You are right , bamboo core have diferent thickness and with . For example handle area is 1/2 thicker then whol core .
With green wood i mean air dryied outside. (naturally dried).
Traditional they use acacia or mulberry for siyahs.
Traditional they use acacia or mulberry for siyahs.
If I still remember, I think it was taper from the splice to the handle.
So, it would be thicker at the splice and thin as it nears the center.
The Horn is opposite, getting thinner as it nears the splice.
That is....if I remember correctly. :D
I think Thomas explained this on my thread some times ago~
Edit------------------------------------------
"The core tapers from 1/4" at the siyah to 1/8" at the handle. "
There is your answer for the core :)

Thanks alex,
I dont think that this is my answer.
I mean only the bamboo.
Take a look at hornbow.com (cross section), there you can see that the bamboo at the handle is thicker and at the splice or near before, the bamboo has its thinnest section.
I want to know is the thinnest part of the bamboo near before the splice (like on turkish bows 1 inch before the kasan), or at end of splice.

:? I see what you mean now!
This is odd indeed, perhaps it is slightly thinner in the limbs and increases thickness in the handle and splice?
We need more expert for this, though that is what I see when I check the cross sections....
