please tell me how to prepare fish air bladder glue? what proportion of air bladders / water prior to make glue? I realized that it made quite a long time - approximately 22-24 hours. after degradation of bladders - this is the finished glue, or dilution is needed? Can this be used re-glue and how to store? ask these questions because the information that I found is quite different. may have already written in this forum but not found the topic. please for help or a link. Thank you!

The bladder is cleaned to remove any oily substance and then dried. After complete drying, you can cut it with a cleaver or dry food grinder and boil it.

There are different proportions of water/dried bladder for different operations. (1) gluing wood or bamboo splices/joints (thick), (2) attaching sinew (medium) and (3) adding birch bark (thin). But for any operation, the wood/bamboo surfaces should be well impregnated with a thin glue mixture which is allowed to penetrate and dry before final gluing. Surfaces must be heated (very warm to the touch) before joining so that air bubbles will not weaken the joint. You should take care not to allow oil from sweat to get on the surfaces to be glued.

The glue can be re-used but it must not be allowed to decompose due to action of bacteria.

Mr. Selby, I forgot to mention that I bought from the air bladders ready DICK - GmbH. will use to adhere the parts of the maple wood core (siyahs, handle). hide glue to understand that 2 / 3 water. Is this good proportion of the air bladder / water? also read that the finished fish glue to dry on plates and stored in refrigerator (cool and dry place) long. Is this true? please excuse me for questions,.. but I want to do the best for my first bow. Thank you!

Pazuzu , you live in country vith sea . Not like me ,in central europe-Slovakia. You can buy from fishmans some fresh airblaiders or whole fish (+ meat) for smaler money , then buy fish glue from Dick ? And remember, dicks glue is from sturgeon airblaiders -very special substance . Other fish bladers is little diferent.Koreanc croacker bladers is closer to others "normal"bladers.
But , of course this way is full "smel" and dirty work...
Some ilustrating pics :

airblaiders from sweatwather big fishes

kaspic sturgeon airbladers-you can see diferencies

this part of sturgeon bladers is very soft easy scrap

only this soft material is use for dry

if you have chance buy full fish, in sturgeon head is another superb skin in fish mouth-for "palate glue" . This glue use turkish old masters.

plus you have fantastic decoration skin for your bow

hi Dusan :D. I also tried to find fishermen but by dealing with sturgeons is drastically reduced in the Black Sea and is very difficult. so I bought a small amount of air bladders DICK sample. will try again with fishermen. your photos and information helps me a lot - thank you!

Like you can teach from korean bowyears- you dont need sturgeon (but this is probably best). Other big fishes vith big bladers is good too, but cleaning work vith , is much more hard then vith sturgeon. And longer cooking too.

I can't give to the proportion of water/glue. I only get to see the final form. The idea is that you want the thin glue to penetrate to wood and small cracks in horn. In the other hand, you want some thicker mass when you glue large components so that there is no possibility of leaving voids between the surfaces.

It is worth remembering that sturgeon flesh tastes good too. So you get glue, leather and food from the same fish.

ups ... have prepared a little isinglass from fish air bladders sample. Can you tell me how to preserve it, and how long you retain the quality? thank you! [external image]

Pazuzu , you cooked material from Dick ? Or you cooked row bladers ? Because material from Dick is once cooked and dreid an you only fue houres before work soaked in hot water...
Dusan
In fact i havent Dicks material , but when i see pics , its looks like other fish glue plates what i bought from other stores. And this mines was once cooked and next drayed in thin plates. But if your material dont diossolve about fue minut in lite hot water its - strange. Because if its pure sturgeon bladers material(like in mi pics) its dissolve quickly.
Its one reason why i dont buy glues . I donnt confidence big producers... You know -todays milk is not true milk, todays yogurt or butter is --- And maybe this glue is not from bladers but maybe not from sturgeon...
Once you cookid , dry this , broke in litlle pieces and save in dry box. But next time wait ,and cook it before gluening. Naturals glues lost his quality every time if you precooked moore time. Fresh fish blader first time cooked is better for you.

Glue proportion is important but not enough for backing. İt is very important how amount glue immersed .Snew must absorb glue well. İn addition room temperature and humidity is very important when backing because of immersing.

Hi everyone! I want to ask one more thing. already common to glue wood core of my bow with fish air bladder glue. how long it should be clamps before you start working on them for pasting of horn plates? how much time is needed to dry adhesive? thank you!
Rapsod
I tried normal gelatin for cooking for "v" splice (about 15cm long) just for fun and practice. After only one day of drying joint was so good that wood cracked beneath joint. I also tried to glue horn and wood with gelatin and that thing was complete disaster.
Dusan
Boys , no gelatine. Use seriouz sinew, fish , or if you haevnt - normal hide glue. But your practice work is good idea for Pazuzu too. If you first time working vith glue and every step is for you questionable its no good for your bow. First glued some pieces wood vith horns and sinews , and teach how this materials worked . Only if you have some experience , you can work vith expensive (horn , good wood, sinew ) materials. I destroy good materilas 7 years. I know what about i talking

hi all! I do experiments every day, and I'm glad that the collection experience and also very glad of your help. great attention to every detail is an important one for me. I learned that fish glue dry slowly in the other animal glues and we are still afraid to work on the wood core. I gluing core before 10 days. I got to this stage..[external image]
