Silk instead of sinew
Hi all
I was thinking of backing the bow I'm currently working on with silk rather than sinew. Chris Constantine from Spitfire prefers silk as it's easier to make and doesn't take as long a time to dry, it's also more resilient to the rain (which I get a lot of!).
How does a bow backed with silk instead of sinew perform?
Thanks!

Another novice vith new experiment ? You dont (not trust- /mi anglish.../) appreciate your time and money ?
Daryush , Silk funkcionuje na drevianych prostych lukach , ale na kompozitach nema , zadnego sensa. Ty myslis , ze by go neuzivali chincici , jezeliby to mialo sensa ? Skoda trudu ... i materialu . Zostav silk na tetive. Bende potrzebny. Nech ti sie zdarza.

Your name .Its tipical Poland name Dariusz. short Darek. Its in Gift- traslat in anglish. :)
Silk will not add any strength to the bow like sinew will.daryush wrote:

It will however act as some protection against failure of the backing wood or core if that is under the silk.
I would never do that. Besides the reflexing properties, sinew has some mechanical strength which reduces the tensile strain on the back side of the wood.
Think of the strain. Do you trust your core to last without backing? If you don't, do you trust it just because of silk on it?

Ah ok, thanks for the answers.
Is there something else other than sinew that might take less time to dry or something then (other than fibreglass)?

Only thing you can do if you dont have the time, buy a bow.
Wheres the fun and learning in that!
Hehe, I guess sinew it is then :P
