Bamboo back and belly
Hi all
I'm thinking of building a bow but due to various reasons can't do one in horn and sinew, so I thought to use bamboo for both the back and belly. I think for the backing it is easy because you use the outer side, but which part do you use for the belly? And do you have to treat it in any way too (heat tempering, etc)
Thanks!

The outside of the bamboo always faces outwards, on the back or the belly. Bamboo back and belly bows are difficult to construct without experience, If you dont have dimensions and core taper dimensions it will take a few bows to get it right, In my opinion.
Hehe, I've never been opposed to learning by trial and error!
How about bamboo backing with bamboo flooring underneath?

My attempt of korean style bow from two opposite pieces of bamboo, 51", 40lbs:

First attempt? What a job, that's a beautiful bow. How does it perform?
That bow looks fantastic! Is it at full draw? How does it shoot?
(and post a (diagrammatic) build along!)

Thats no first attempt, third already... but first korean style. Shotting quite good, but any miracle and I still havent correctly string and arrows. Hwarang is sure much faster. Full draw is 33", I draw it no more... this kind of bow, from two opposite pieces of boo is sure possible make shortly and stronger and with greater reflex I think - I want try it in my next work. Thanks guys... :)
Peto:
how did you get the thickness of the limb pieces?
Can you post tickneses and widths of the bow?
No sinew backing?
Can you post an unbraced pictures?
I am thinking of making similar bow by:
1. Boiling belly piece to reflex. Dry it. Flatten nodes.
2. Glue ears. Glue bamboo flooring riser in middle.
3. Tiller thickness to 1/10 (??)of desired weight on full draw. Do not taper width yet.
4. Measure thickness. Make belly piece with 50% thickness in thickest part. Make thickness taper 30% more than the 50% used in thickest parts.
5. Boil backig pieces. Attach ears to board and use the belly part as form. Clamp and leave backing to dry.
6. Glue backings. Get rid of shiny surface on back. Flatten nodes slightly. Scratch surface and glue in sinew backing.
7. dry
8. Finnish tiller from width.
Any bad ideas. Are the numbers presented anywhere near reasonable?

Ok, I try it with my dreadfull english. I hope you will understand.
Widths is 30mm, thickness is 10mm.
No sinewing.

Im beginer, so I dont know how this make profi bowmakers. I make it thus:
- planing 3 pieces of boo and two pieces of yew for syahs
- bending back piece
- bending syahs
- gluing handle from juniper on back
- carving handle
- gluing syahs with V-split
- tillering this piece (back with handle and syahs)
- bending belly
- two bended pieces for belly I clamp to jig and tillering, but very carefull and no to full draw - I was afraid
- gluing belly
- carving syahs
- tillering from sides
- making leather handle and tips
- whiping (?) cotton fiber
- testing and measurements power
- photos for friends on atarn
- sawing on little pieces
- burning in oven
... :D
