Bone/antler target and hunting points
How long would you make a ?V? splice for an antler target point to be inserted in the wood shaft? Would 1 inch be long enough?
For an antler hunting point, how long would you make this ?V? splice. I?d like to avoid breaking splices due to bone hits.
Thanks!

PS: I forgot: wood diameter is 1/3"

These are replikas of a find from about 200-500 AD, Norway. - for hunting reindeer. Not even a v-splice :) The contact surface is 3cm long. It was probably glued with hide glue or pitch, and lashed with sinew covered with birch bark. One should keep in mind that such arrows were not made for continous use against a target, though.

If you want to do the V splice things, I would reverse it. The way you have the head/shaft drawn, any impact on the point is going to cause the harder bone/antler to split the shaft. Seems kinda wasteful. If you make the female V notch in the head, and bring the shaft to a wedge point. Then impact won't split the shaft. Just my opinion...

Ken,
The original arrowheads of this type nearly always had the male part of the joint. Sinew wrapping the shaft prevented any tendency to split the wood.

Making V-splices in the bone is easy ... if you own a band saw.
Use an antler tine and drill a tapered hole in the blunt end. Insert the tapered shaft. This will work well for target use.
