bleached horn strips from Peter

Peter Cua sent me a couple of bleached strips to test, one white/bleached, the other black/bleached (now brown with streaks of yellow). The white/bleached had a nice amber colour.

I cut similat width and thickness pieces from the strips. They were cut from approx. the same place on the strips.

The test consisted of bending to check for stiffness and the breaking strain. Since only one piece of each kind was used, the tests can be considered "preliminary", not statistically significant.

I found the bending modulus of all strips to be about the same, maybe the bleached strips being slightly stiffer. The ability of the strips to bend without breakage was about the same for all. Breakage started from defects in the strips even at 14% strain.

I would not hesitate to try the bleached horn for a bow as the ultimate test. There are risks involved of course: it is still possible the bleached horn is not as resililent or resistant to fatique (durable) as the un-bleached one.
