I have recently decided to take the plunge and attempt to make my 1st hornbow. I got Adam's book a month ago and have been reading it ever since! I have got 2 maple cores prepared and soaking in water now...but for now I am shooting a 52 inch sinew backed juniper recurve and have found the finger pinch to be a bit annoying! So I made a thumb ring this morning but I have never even seen or shot with one so it was a bit of guesswork and what i've ended up with seems to work but doesn't give a clean release (loud twang!!) and it hurts! So I was just wondering if any of you folks can help me or point me in the right direction of some tips on making / using a thumb ring that would be geat.

There are many threads on this site about making thumb rings. You will find lots of examples if you search the site.

In order to learn one of the many thumb ring shooting techniques, you need to start off simply. The best beginning ring is a leather thumb guard. Firstly, this lets the archer get used to the correct positioning of the string in relation to the thumb because you can feel it. Secondly, when you move onto a hard ring, you can feel whether it is working properly or not.

The loud twang is an unusual effect. If you can post a picture of you thumb in position on the string, I might be able to help.
