Boomerang arrow

Hi everybody

There is a funny article on which I stumbled, that mentioned a " returning
arrow" that was intended to" kill an enemy standing beside oneself offguard".
Here is the link to the original site :

Has anyone tried this ????

Alam,
I never worked out a safe way to test it. If it works it is dangerous to the archer and if it doesn't work everyone else is in danger.

This part of Arab Archery caused a lot of trouble for the translator because it introduced the concept of "male" feather. While on the returning arrow this was undoubtedly a feather near the foot of the shaft, I think in ordinary usage it probably meant the upright feather of the normal three fletchings.

In English, the feathers used to be referred to as the cock feather and the hen feathers. The cock feather was the feather in western arrows that pointed away from the bow. Since a cock is a male fowl, the similarity to the Arabic name is obvious.

Is funny that you say this as you are from the land of Boomerangs (joking)

Maybe better to try this one without to many bystanders, or else someone
might really be hit by the arrow......
I can't imagine anyway that the arrow, given the right wind, shoots anything
more than a C curve. But maybe with the right "rajali" feathers.....maybe.
It may still be good to have a "hijab" or some other magic amulet that protects from bullets & arrows.......

hello,

coincidentally I?ve done some of these arrows a few days ago and they are really boomerangs.
There is really no danger cause due to the heavy fletching they gain no speed, they fly as slow as paperplanes.
The first test-flight was a success, the arrow came back 5m beside of me after having done a "circle" of 40m.The arrow is 28"long with a 30lbs spine and shot by a selfbow which draws 35lbs.Fletching is 4 feathers at the end and the top of the arrow and 3" in length.I tried also to fix the feathers in the same direction,no chance,no boomerang. For the weight I drilled holes in both ends.Within the holes I fixed a 1"-nail at the top, within the hole at the end I fixed a 2"-nail.This I found out by "try and error",without these weights no boomerang!
I got the best results by shooting these arrows standing on soft slope against a little wind downwards.
If you shot such an arrow straight up into the sky it makes 1 or 2 loopings.
There is a lot to think about, maybe it is possible to provocate within the construction a certain fligth-pattern,maybe we will have a new competititon:acrobatic arrow-flight.
I think shooting with such arrows is disposed to beginners and for children and for every archer,it is really fascinating to see a boomerang-arrow gliding back.
I want to post a pic too,but I have to realize that its size is to big.Tomorrow I?ll post it.

I knew there must be someone out there who tried this stunt successfully.
By the way, where is Schopfheim? Myself, I stay in Bielefeld NRW.
I am eagerly awaiting you posting a photo of your returning arrow.

hello, here?s a picture of that boomerang!

Uhuh, thats the way you made it. Does it spin around its axis in flight? I don't
know whether this is what you've meant with "loopings". Now I understand
the inportance of weights you've mentioned. Also it doesn't look like it could
hurt anybody.....Do you mind if I try to copy your design and build one by
myself?

Alam,

Schopfheim is in the southwest of Germany, near the swiss town Basel, yesterday we had that terrible thunderstorm here and it damaged 2 of my actual reconstructions(korean bamboo bow,a russian bow) and a bit more. The bows were not ready, but half the work was done. The water came into my workshop. That?s history.
You can copy my "boomerangs" and for sure you will enjoy them. These arrows spine around their axis when shot with a heavy-drawweight-bow,with looping I mean what stunt pilots do.You will see it.When you will shot your "boomerangs" do it very far away from any trees,3 of my boomerangs live now in some oak-trees.

I am very sorry of what happened to you yesterday. I hope you can save
some of your work or redo some of it. There where huge thunderstorms
yesterday also around where I live. For some reason my pc wasn't working
for an hour or so after a lightning struck - then miraculously it suddenly worked again.
So Schopfheim is at the very southeastern tip of Germany. A long way off
from where I live. Thanks fo letting me use your design & technique.

In fletchers-corner.de there was a discussion about boomerang arrows recently, some examples have been built and shot with basically the same experiences as described by redhawk.

btw: yes, Schopfheim is where "fox and rabbit say good-night to each other" :-) but most definately worth a visit, even from as far away as Bielefeld; I know what I?m talking about...
