Cooking wood in salt water

The idea is to increase water boiling point to get the wood hotter and thus get longer working time. I do not think there are cheap pressure cookers with required size and having a home made one sounds like cry for Darwing award...

It takes 58g of table salt (NaCl) per one litre of water to increase boiling points for one celsius.[1] NaCl has solubility of 400g/Litre of boiling water [4]. Thus it would be possible to increase boining point only 6?C.

The boling point for highway salt(CaCl2) water mix is 118?C (244?F) for 38% solution. [3] It has solubity of 750g/Litre in 20 ?C. [wikipedia] probably around 1300g/litre (estimate) in boiling water.

It looks like 25Kg of highway salt ( CaCl2 )is available for 14 EUR. [2]
Table salt (NaCL) cost less than euro/Kg in food store.

The salt is recycleable, if you can evaporate the water away. This is would require storing the water somewhere without having to worry it falling over. Somewhere where it does not freeze or collect rain. Boiling the water away is also possible.

Are there any bad effects for boiling wood in salt water, like making it fragile or more prone to sucking water?
Dusan
Yes. Micro salt pieces can fusion to wood. This was very bad news for future colagen .

You mean: Hide glue would not stick ?

How deep would the salt penetrate the wood? I mean the surfaces will be roughed anyway...
Dusan
NaCl is very agresive.Forget this way. Evan water must be very careful selectet.

Maybe Tom Duvernay can comment: my impression was that in Korea they soak birchbark in sea water and his has no adverse affect on the glue. However, perhaps in wood the formation of salt crystals in the fissures in the wood would prevent penetration of the glue and reduce its effective surface area for adhesion..
