I think the most drawing length may be 80 cm .at that length zhe bow have small sound like zizi.. for safe I draw 75 cm.

Shooting inside your own apartment? That's awesome.
Good bow and good technique. You have demonstrated how the traditional Chinese skills can be revived. Although the bow design is Turkish, it is also related to Ming Chinese. For your next bow, perhaps you can copy some of the Ming bows in old paintings. One good source: Tibetan temple wall paintings in Qinghai, like Ali and Cao Tai (Ledu, Haixi).
thank your advice Stephen Selby :)
painting is difficult work for me .and my bow is not sable.
in summer if raining some days ,it will be weak ,if shooting sometime it maybe seperate :(
and I have questions ,how is hornbow used in raining days hundreds years ago.
if new bow is no broking after summer ,I will paint it.

In Summer when humidity is high, you will need to keep the bow in the heat box or chest some days before shooting (as far as I know, some 4-5 degrees above normal room temperature in your house). But string only after it is entirely cold again...
congratulations thats a nice bow !
good to see I m not the only one :-))Justin Ma wrote:

thanks jj and uli
I think I must accept fact that hornbow will be weak if it be put in humidity wheathy long time allthouth protected by painting . :?
if it can be used in any condition ,more men will like it.

In Chinese literature that is one of the qualities of a good bow. (王琚: ?弓有六善: ... 三者久射力不屈, 四者寒暑力一?)bluesky79 wrote:

Although the cause of the defects is not analyzed, I would consider that speedy construction which leaves moisture in the materials instead of allowing the materials to dry fully is a root cause. The more water that remains in the structure of the bow, the more it is likely to be affected by ambient temperature.
谢老你好,我要学的还很多呀。
I Live in zhejiang .I made bow four years ago ,gaoxiang teach me.
and I found the bow finished one year ,no painting ,only coverd bark,if bad weather coming it will become weak too.gaoxiang lived in north of China,so he didnt meat this problem.
I found zhe gule is most easy to be weaked.
I will try some ways to prevent moisture.for example reduce gule ,use oil
painting. put bow in plastic bag in bad wheath .

Bluesky; I also enjoy your bow. What is zhe glue made from?
It is fish bladders ,but I don't know wich fish .maybe Yellow croaker
it?s small, yellow colour and not thick。cook for 2or3 hours at 90-95 degree

Bluesky, that is a beautiful example, I really like the birch bark finish. The question you ask about poor weather is one that I've pondered for years. There has to be an answer as these bows covered a vast area of land mass, with all kinds of weather but I've not heard of them delaminating mid battle. Would a lacquer like urushi be a good idea?
This bow finished half year ago ,I have pay attion to it's performance in bad weather and dry weather . before coverd it's sensitive by weather change .
after covered bark and tung oil ,it isn't sensitive.but i think zhe moisture is difficoult to come in and difficoult to go out .the bow have not good performace in dry days .and not so weak in bad weather.
next time I will try painting.

Very beautifull bow - My compliments to your craftmanship.
Personally I love the clean look with birchbark - simple and beautifull :-)
I belive you could carefully dry out the bow and apply a waterresistant surface like urushi, but I have no experience regarding this when it comes to hornbows.
Cool shooting inside your home :-D I woudn't dare that - especially with a new bow. One of my friends once tested drawing one of his bows in the basement (always put on an arrow to avoid dry-shooting by accident) and the string slipped at full draw - the arrow hit a window, blew up in alot of pieces and chipped a piece of the window surface!
